Just a little reminiscing while working at my dad's shop yesterday. This is the hoist we used to lift boxes of chemistry and everything else that had to go up and/or down. It was installed when they did the two story addition to his building. I would imagine it was engineered in the plans that my grandfather drew. (he was one of the head engineers for Sherwin-Williams plant in chitcago) Anyway, I remember the ironworkers that did the welding. They were friends of the owners of the bakery next door. As far as the cart goes, I'm sure it was a "wing-it" sort a thing. Today, I'm sure if someone posted here, plans to do such a cart, it would be attacked like a trailer. Not saying they are wrongfull attacks, JUST SAYIN! I'm sure the lawyers could/would have a field day with something like this. So, it would probably be left to some large company with deep pockets. But, 30 years ago, you had guys with skill and knowledge of what will work. They did the work and America was built on this ethic. No engineered drawings or anything. Today, no one tries anything, in fear of the gov. and the lawyers. (even thought they're both the same) And where is that getting us. I look at this basket as "over built", but not as over built as I probably would have done. And the weld around the lifting hook, looks a little small, to me, but who can argue with 30 years of testing. The welds on the ceiling plate definately look like 6010. But how about the basket and lifting hook? Those got me. I would still say 6010 but not 100% sure. Maybe 6013?Oh well, just thought I'd share. Reply:well, I don't know about attacks, it's not a man lift. The only thing I'd add would be a chain across the front to prevent anything from trying to tip out.And maybe do the lift point differently. plate instead of rod. just my $0.02But like you said, can't argue with 30 yrs of testing. But lets be honest, how often did you ride up/down in it as a kid? There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger

Reply:Isn't stupid getting hurt/killed just a normal Darwin event to improve the species? I doubt that anyone sued the mastodon when Gorg failed to get out of its way...The idiot that put a crushable cup of coffee between her legs at the drive-through deserved what she got - almost a Darwin event.Mark Twain (among others) had a plan for improving the country: "First we kill all the lawyers". In 50 years of legal matters, I've known a couple of lawyers that I would speak on behalf of, but there are so many others that should go.

Reply:As far as the lack of signage goes, they always took the approach of hiring people intelligent enough not to need them!"Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:Like you said, you can't argue with years of testing .One comment, the lug on the actual cage, the one made from bend round bar. IMHO that design has to be one of the unsafest designs I have ever seen, not just yours everyone made like that. The dump bodies we get at work have the same style on the tailgate for lifting it off as well as a lot of the plows for lifting. I've seen more of them break than I care to remember, the point of failure being at the last bend on either side of the weld......Mike

Reply:I think it is more of a tensile load."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"
