I recently acquired a couple of small older Smith torches and have a couple of tips for each.  The small Number 2 (aircraft) torch tips are labeled V25 and V27, and the medium size Number 8 tips start with L, such as L85.  I've attached a couple of pictures. Are any of the modern tips compatible with these, or will I need to hunt for the old ones?  I so far haven't had much luck finding any information. Thanks Attached ImagesHobart Handler 210Lincoln AC-225Smith Torches/Regs
Reply:I suppose these aren't that popular since no one chimed in, but I'm still needing some info on these torch tips.  I've tried cleaning the tips, but the flame quality is not great (split flame, uneven) and they are pretty noisy too.  The cheap HF torches I have produce a quieter and more uniform flame, as does the old Purox W-200, so either there are torch issues with the Smiths or the tips need to be replaced (or cleaned better). Are the Smith V or L-series tips on the old torches compatible with anything still being produced?  The Purox doesn't seem to be quite as old and apparently the W-200 tips are still available (I think the 4200 series), so maybe I should concentrate on that one in favor of the Smiths. If I would be better off just buying a new torch, I'm OK with that too and open to suggestions.  The cutting tips I have seem to work fine, so I'm mainly after a mid-size welding torch to play around with. One thing I do prefer with the old torches over the HF torch is the position of the valves.  The old ones are positioned forward on the body, so it's easier to handle those without accidentally bumping the knobs which are right at the hose inlets on the HF torch.  I find myself holding the arrestors and hose in favor of the actual torch body to avoid the knobs.Hobart Handler 210Lincoln AC-225Smith Torches/Regs
