Hey guys. Was wondering if I could get some insight on a little part time work I may pick up. Guy has aluminum wheels. Wants me to fill in the original lug pattern with plugs and weld them in. I'm planning on preheating them to around 350°f.  I'm using a lincoln squarewave 175. %100 argon. Pure 3/32 tungsten. My question is this... With my preheating and cleaning properly. Is this doable? The well doesn't have to be a crazy penetrate. Just enough to hold the plug in solid. And be penetrated deep enough so when the weld is milled off its still stationary. Thoughts, suggestions, give up while I'm ahead? Thanks in advance guysSent from my Nexus 4 using TapatalkUsing Tapatalk
Reply:So, is this just for 'art,' or is he planning to cut a new lug hole pattern?Sorry...I cannot help with the welding issues, just curious about the project.Kev.Kevin / Machine_Punk from The Aerodrome Studio - Lincoln PowerMIG 210 MP - Meco N Midget w/custom welding station - Vintage Victor 100Current Projects: The Aerodrome Studio
Reply:first we need to know why they are getting filled in ? why is the weld getting milled off ? is this for art or going back on a car?
Reply:The weld will get milled flush to the wheel again, not cut into the wheel at all. Then yes a new lug pattern will be drilled into the wheel. Sent from my Nexus 4 using TapatalkUsing Tapatalk
Reply:Run away...Aluminum loses about 42% of the base metal strength after welding. Unless you are going to re-temper the entire wheel, the liability would scare me away. Reply:Let's say their is no liability. Just Sent from my Nexus 4 using TapatalkUsing Tapatalk
Reply:Drop the wheel and run away quickly.  My only advice is DON'T DO IT.  Just because you can, doesn't always mean you should.  I wouldn't touch a job like that without a full welding quality department and a lot of destructive testing of sample parts.Kev.Kevin / Machine_Punk from The Aerodrome Studio - Lincoln PowerMIG 210 MP - Meco N Midget w/custom welding station - Vintage Victor 100Current Projects: The Aerodrome Studio
Reply:Your machine doesn't have the balls to penetrate into the aluminum well. I assume the new holes would be located near or on the plugs, I wouldn't trust plugs with shallow welds to hold with the kind of forces it needs to handle... Also it looks to be cast aluminum, you may have trouble with porosity. Add all that up and bad things could happen.  There is always liability.Last edited by SquirmyPug; 11-27-2013 at 12:51 AM.Airco Ac/Dc 300 HeliwelderMillerMatic 200 (stolen)Miller Maxstar 150STLMiller AEAD200LE (welding and generating power) Hobart MIG

Lets just say (since you didnt) that this goes on a derby car for your buddy. Reply:Just a couple of alarming things I see. First it is a casting. A weld is going to be half as strong as original at best without proper heat treat. Second, even if it was not a casting, the bevels on the plug are far from deep enough.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.

Reply:Back in my days at the International Harvester truck shop we had a "new guy" on our shift that was very similar "the guy" in physical stature. One day at work he called me over to his bay and said "This transmission is about to fall off of this jack.  When I pick this transmission up I want you to move the transmission jack over to the left a little bit." I asked him how he was pick the trans up because I did not see one of our portable engine hoists around and there was no crane in that bay.  He just replied "When I pick up the transmission, move the jack over about 3 inches, OK?"  Then he did a sort of squat and got ahold of that transmission and lifted it up.I moved the jack and he set the trans down.  He said "Thanks, I just couldn't lift the trans and move with it too."  Transmission weighed about 675 pounds or so.  From that day forward we were all super nice to "Mr. Mickey".
