Just wanted to share a pic of a tool I use all the time. It makes life so much easier when doing tack up work espescially with the non ferrous metals. I have them laying around all different sizes, from giant to tiny, depending on project. They take minutes to make out of scrap, but a dream when you need an extra hand. Reply:Pipeliners have similar looking tools called grasshoppers. They use them for grounds. Almost looks like one. Good idea bud!
Reply:Absolutely LOVE mine. And I think I got the idea here. If you cant fix it with a hammer, it must be an electrical problem."Boy, everyone starts with a full bag of luck and an empty bag of experience. The trick is to fill the bag of experience before the bag of luck is empty."-Grandad circa 1990ish

Reply:Here's mine. It has a sliding weight with a flat washer inside to keep the weight from sliding back.
Reply:Awesome ideas. I can fab that and if it looks bad it won't matter! haha Hobart EZ-Tig newbie.
Reply:Mine isn't pretty, and it's bent at a 45*, but it works awesome! Next one I'm going to sharpen to a point and make a 90*. this is the easiest and most used tool anyone can make/use.Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer

Reply:Maybe put a T on the end with two points.  Don't put the T square, but at an angle.  Flip it one way for a over 90 deg point for tall stuff.  Flip it the other way for an under 90deg point to get into corners or whatever.Dynasty200DX w/coolmate1MM210MM VintageESAB miniarc161ltsLincoln AC225Victor O/A, Smith AW1ACutmaster 81IR 2475N7.5FPRage3Jancy USA1019" SBAEAD-200LE
Reply:This is a tig figer: ("tig finger heat shield")The topic of this thread is a "welder's/weldor's finger" although I've also heard them referred to as a "third hand".I have a couple and they work great!  Use them very frequently for TIG welding.  I brazed some bronze onto the tip of mine (as well as onto the sides, where I often mount my ground clamp) and have an effective tool for getting a good ground on small parts.I wouldn't mind making another one...  it's useful to have a variety of different ones.  Different lengths, angles, weights, etc. Attached Images

Reply:Yeah, I think I will buy a couple as well, as I type on my phone Im stareing at a cooked knuckle. Happy Easter everyone!   I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
Reply:Originally Posted by papaharley03No, it isn't. And the glove isn't attached. It's a heat shield material folded up such that it slips over your finger. I bought a couple of them and they do keep the heat off your finger. I use it mostly on my middle finger as that's the one under the torch, nearest the heat. The other device mentioned in the thread is what I have called a mechanical finger. It's one of the first things a welder should make according to some of my handbooks.Papa

Reply:Mike, that is a very handy looking piece. Thanks for sharing. As far as the pinky guard, I made some of those years ago from left over exhaust wrap. Cool someone is making a buck on em. Never thought to market it.HammerFile Big Hammer------------------------------Here, let me Google that for you...

Reply:Here's the one I built, 3/8" rebar and 1" square stock. I need to build a couple more with longer fingers.
Reply:I was almost ready to order one of those finger guards from welding tips and ticks from a few posts up. But last night I thought of this. We have a hydroulic shop at work and they have spools of different size heat and fire retartent sheathing that they put over some of the hoses when they make em up. So I cut a few pieces up and was good to go. Just fold it over, squeeze it back into itself, and you done.   Attached ImagesI hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been CowboysI'm gonna market mine a little different than Jodi's tho. Reply:I just made a 'better' tig finger (third hand) today, I'll get pics tomorrow. It's a 3/4" x 12 (with a 4" 90 degree neck) round stock that slides into a 10" 1.25x.25 tube, that's drilled/tapped with a 3/8" bolt on top. In collapsed position it's around 15" long. I may still weld a nut on top of the tapped threads because 16tpi x .25" = 4 threads... I'm not comfortable with that. I feel it may be a bit long, but I can always shorten it by chopping the tapped end of the tube and trimming the round stock.Miller: 200dx, Bobcat 225, Passport, Powermax 45, Milwaukee: Dry Saw, MagDrill, grinders
