Hello All, I have some pics of a 9 inch rear that I would like to narrow. The problem is there is a shoulder that the old axle tube slides over and was welded at the factory. I have tried to remove the weld as you can seeIt appears it was pressed on then welded?? Any help PLEASE!!  Do I cut the housing just past the weld and machine the axle tube to slide inside the housing a inch or so then weld it up?? Thanx Dale. Narrowed a few in the past just not this close to the housing. Iam thinkin I stepped on my Di-k?? Attached Images
Reply:If it is pressed in you should be able to remove the welds and then use a bar inserted from the opossite end to drive the old tube out. I have taken axle tubes out of cast iron housings this way but have never had to remove an axle tube from a 9" The only 9" axles I have seen done they just cut the tube where needed and replaced the end on the shortened tube with out removing it from the center housing.
Reply:What he ^^ said.Strange (for one) has axle tube ends that eliminates the need to reclaim the originals.http://www.summitracing.com/search/B.../?autoview=SKUMM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:I would heat the housing and try tapping it out like above. Maybe even cut it off where you cut the weld so you know you are not fighting a weld and tap it out. Reply:How do you know where to cut it in the first place?I have done my fair share of these and I think you are doing this all wrong.I have seen wider carriers in a dragster....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:I am wondering if you indeed screwed the pooch.   Cast iron (Dana) axles are easey to re-tube.  Ford ?????  Try posting up on Priate4x4..Currie offers up custom housing for under $500 clams.  http://www.currieenterprises.com/ces...E.aspx?id=1563
Reply:I cut the one I did just like you did, just cut beyond the weld and the old tube will come out fine.I made a jig before I removed the tubes so when I shortened it I mounted it in the jig it had the same orientation just shorter.have funTom

Reply:I'll second the arc air!  Works like pacman eating ghosts after chomping a power pellet.  "Eat em up, yum yum!"And if you know what you're doing, there will be no doubt where it is (well..was) welded.  Find that hairline and follow it!Last edited by mb_welder; 04-17-2012 at 09:18 PM.

Reply:I never done one that way.. I always cut the bearing ends off, true them back up in a lathe, then cut the tubes off to meet the dimensions I'm trying to achieve and weld the bearing ends back on..( Using a jig of course ).. Here it a picture of the one I did for my 65 Impala.... I cut about 10" out of it and centered the pinion under the car....
