Does anyone happen to know the standard specs for building metal railings.  how high? space between the uprights etc.  this is going on my deck and patio.  also any pics of jigs you have for making railings would be great too.   the patio will be max of 40" above ground level and the deck is about 6 1/2 feet above ground level.   here is a pic of the metal I am using.     Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250
Reply:I think that depends on building code for your area. There are usually standard codes for railing height, space between supports, etc.Hobart EZ-Tig newbie.
Reply:I think its 36" high and a 4"sphere cannot fit through any space in the railing, but im not all the way sure on that.
Reply:round here they had to be at least 40" tall and less than a 3.5" gap for the ballisters. But that was for a daycare. Not sure if that was actual county code. I did wood rails on my deck and just placed my level between the balisters when I was placing them. 2.5" gap between the 2x2 ballisters. There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger
Reply:As you can see by previous responses, it really is a location variable. City Hall is the place to ask to get the specs. Jigs depend a lot on what the panel designs is. Straight pickets or curvy swirly. Pickets, you can tack bits of flat bar scrap to your table to hold the pickets in place to tack together, repeatably. I've used a sheet of 3/4 std. plywood on the floor. Used drywall screws to attach 1x2" MDF blocks to hold the pickets. Cheap and effective if you don't have a big table and/or enough scrap bits to tack up holders on the table. Remember it's good to tack the panels in the jig, pull them out and weld them alternating from one side to the other. Weld all one side and the panel will bow. 200amp Air Liquide MIG, Hypertherm Plasma, Harris torches, Optrel helmet, Makita angle grinders, Pre-China Delta chop saw and belt sander, Miller leathers, shop made jigs etc, North- welders backpack.
Reply:residential is usually 36'"-38". and thats for a guard rail or a handrail (irc)commercial is usually 42" for guard rail and 36"-38" for a handrail. (ibc)  which means for commercial stair, you need to have the guard at 42", and a handrail between 36" and 38".guard rail differs from handrail in that a guardrail is to keep objects (mainly people) from falling.  a guard needs to be able to pass the 4" sphere rule, which is to say a 4" sphere cannot pass through.  there is an exception on the stair tread  but that is not everywhere and youd do better to just have it pass the 4" sphere.handrails are needed at steps, guard rails are needed wherever there is more than a 30" drop.free download here http://www.stairways.org/SMA-Bookstore
Reply:and sometimes homeowner insurance have their own requirements

Reply:Thanks for the info.  I had 42 inches stuck I'm my head so I will probably go with that and cut some 2x4 studs to use as the spacers between the slats.   Will be doing plain ol vertical slats.Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk 2Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250

Reply:Forget the 2x4. Buy a prepunched bar the same width as your top and bottom rail. Cut it in half then cut out one side of each square hole. You can clamp this to the top and bottom rail and not only will your pickets be in the right place but centered as well.
Reply:Going by the IBC guard railings are 42" high and in no place shall a 4" sphere pass.   On rails i build for apartments and the like i just use a 1" or 3/4" tube on 4" centers and they usually takes care of the 4" max opening and its super simple and easy to manufacture.handrails are to be installed between 34"-38"    we shoot for 36" and take any thing in between.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
