My friend has a spiral staircase. There is no door or gate keeping kids and whatnot from tumbling down said stairs. Lots of activity in the house so i built this little gate. It is designed to match the existing structure, 3/4 in square tube, spaced 3 7/8 inches apart. I had to improvise regarding hinges and latch. I used full size door hinges made of stainless. I had to cut one wing down the middle to fit the gate. This i welded on. The latch i made out of 10 ga stainless. A rod is bolted to the gate that extends to meet the latch. The latch is two fixed pieces that have a third in the middle that moves as the gate rod enters the latch. The moveable piece lifts as the rod enters and then drops down capturing the rod. I know this is hard to describe but hopefully you will look at the pics and it may become less obtuse. I had fun making it and i know my friend and her family will love it! Reply:Nbd fab, I am a PA for the pediatric heart surgery team at children's hosp Wisconsin. I'll give you a holla if we come back that way. My fam loved Scottsdale and we want to come back for another family trip. Look for some posts in the future re si-bronze brazing. I am going to do some experimenting there. I'm about 50/50 art / functional welding. Having a blast! Burn a za, burn some metal. Reply:Looks great! Nice attention to detail - particularly the latch and hinges.  One question:  Latch height looks low enough for cats & dogs to reach.  How do you keep kids (or dogs & cats) from unlatching it?Scottsdale is still nice this time of year.  Only 93 yesterday, 97 tomorrow!    Was repairing pigeon poo welds on the gates at my buddy Flicka's Baja Cantina yesterday afternoon.  It was hot!  But I'm usually outdoors most days ...

Reply:Very nice! Gotta ask, did you use the diversion 165 for that? And what filler did you use for stanless to steel?Hobart EZ-Tig newbie.
Reply:Nice job on the latch! Even better if you cut it by hand ( instead of Milling it)Funny you guys are Doc's. When I was at school, I was helping a guy learn a position. After I gave him a demo  and he got it, I said, " See, it's not brain surgery!" As I learned later after we graduated, from my instructor, Dave turned out, in fact, to be a retired brain surgeon from Cali.. Go figure. Real nice guy. Didn't want any one to know so he didn't stand out.200amp Air Liquide MIG, Hypertherm Plasma, Harris torches, Optrel helmet, Makita angle grinders, Pre-China Delta chop saw and belt sander, Miller leathers, shop made jigs etc, North- welders backpack.

Reply:chimmike, yes i used the diversion. I used 312 filler wire. I was told it would join mild steel to stainless but this whole project was done with stainless. I like the 312, some say to use 309 for mild to stainless. Incidently, i like the look of the weld with 312 since it is shiny and clean looking. Im a hobbiest so i may just use this as my primary welding wire for all steel types. It costs more but im not going to need tons of it over time. PS, i do like working with ss since i worry about treated metals like zinc coating etc... ss is also pretty easy to weld. I use thick copper bars for a heat sink to reduce warping.Miller diversion 165Miller mig 211Hypertherm pm 30Milwaukee 6230 14 inch chop sawMd 45 mag drill (RIP; fell on its head)New MD 45! Reply:burt the welder, thanks! i cut the stainless with my milwaukee porta band saw. That is my primary cutting tool for metal. Yes, i was buying the diversion a while back and asked the guy at airgas if it was hard to maintain two seperate things so close in proximity (tungsten and filler). He said it was hard and it's not for everyone. i told him i spent the last 28 years in heart surgery on infants and he said he thinks id be ok! It does take some dexterity tho. I still have crappy looking welds. I'd love to make those sewing machine welds you see some guys like zap and the like do, but i guess i'll keep working on it and it should get better!Miller diversion 165Miller mig 211Hypertherm pm 30Milwaukee 6230 14 inch chop sawMd 45 mag drill (RIP; fell on its head)New MD 45!
