Sorry if this is a repetitive topic.I just purchased a set of gas lenses for my WP17 torch.Would I keep the Ag flow rate the same as recommended by the Miller calculator or change it in anyway? What size cup opening fpr a 3/32 tungsten? What length Tungsten stick out? Thanks
Reply:I'd leave the flow the same.  Cup as big as you can fit for whatever you're doing. Stickout depends on cup size.  Set the same as with a standard nozzle, but if you have to "cheat" at any point, the gas lens gives you that ability in terms of stickout.
Reply:Since  the GAS LENS  directs the gas flow more directly to the end of the tungsten you can run less CFH  I run 10 CFH  with a WP-20 torch and 3/32 tungsten  #6 cupwhere I would run 15 CFH with a std cup the same size.....your going to run whatever depending on drafts in your weld area.....Typically I run less with a GAS LENS.....  Miller Dynasty 350Twenty Six HammersThree Crow BarsBig Rock
Reply:For learning you can extend the tungsten out to say 1/2" to easily see what you are doing using a #8 cup and 15 cfh and not have any issues with gas coverage. Once you get a better feel for doing tig, I'd back the tungsten stick out back to say 3/8" or so, which is where I usually keep it. My tig instructor had me do a test once to show me how far out you can extend the tungsten and still keep reasonable gas coverage. ( I was running the tungsten too tight and was having issues seeing the arc/puddle) He had me keep extending the tungsten out until I saw either porosity or visible signs the tungsten wasn't getting shielding coverage. I had the tungsten out stupid far before that happened..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:FWIW. you can stick the tungsten out quite a bit, say over 1/2 inch if you are trying to reach down into a tight spot like inside an enclosed area(like a box). The argon will stay contained in same area to sheild.I dropped my argon rate down from 15 to about 12 when I use the gas lenses, which has been a lot lately.
