Running 3/32 7018 excalibur rods get pin holes almost every restart. wondering if anyone could tell me why, and how to correct it and its just not me seems like most in the shop also.
Reply:Moisture. We had a similar problem a few years back. we even changed rod brands. our qc eventually talked management into purchasing a second oven due to the single oven being opened too many times during a work shift.
Reply:Sometime is also due to excessive rod angle and not enough heat. Just try, when you start, to let fall the first drop of metal then start welding.

Reply:When using low hydrogen rods on restarts strike your arc 2 inches away from where you want to start and then pull back across to where you want to start then weld over your arc strike this is the way to get rid of them.
Reply:Porosity at the start of a 7018 weld is caused by too long of an arc. This is common with 7018 and can be corrected by using a shorter arc while starting. Your getting porosity from lack of shielding caused by too long of an arc.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:If it was just you, I would say its because you're a bad welder Since its the whole shop, I'm betting the problem is more with the rods. How are they stored? Is this from just one can or multiple?Sounds like moist/bad rods.Have we all gone mad?
Reply:My guess is long arcing and not grinding the termination to give you a place to build up on at restart. |
