Hey all, so i just got my hands on a 96 F250 7.3 powerstroke and im trying to design a skid that fits my 300D. My question is has anyone ever tried to mount one sideways above the box or is i better lengthwise in the box? I only ask because im trying to get around one of those $1500 cargo bed extender thingys.thanks
Reply:Congrats on your purchase. Now to your question, I would highly discourage from mounting the machine on top of your bed rails, your significantly raising the center of gravity of the truck and asking for problems.I'm a little confused on what a $1500 cargo bed extender thingy is. Are you referring to a flatbed? It would probably be most practical to design and build your own flatbed specific to the type of work your going to be doing. Also, while a 3/4 ton truck is sufficient, thats a good bit of weight your putting in the bed of the truck. You might want to look at acquiring a 1-ton.
Reply:Agree with Smokin...the 300D is a beast and would be a wreck waiting to happen above the rails. The 300 with usual tools and supplies...6 wheels would be nice to have.If you put it in the bed I'd want to have tied down someway to the frame. A sudden stop wouldn't be pretty otherwise. A 7.3 and a 300D sounds like a good combination for a custom built truck bed, I also have a 300D and it's been a great machine for me. Reply:Thanks for the feedback! This is what i was referring to as a "$1500 cargo bed extender thingy"http://www.cargobed.com/industry/wel...ccessories.htmI need one of those "Cargo Beds" so i can roll the welder in and out for oil changes, so i don't have to remove the machine from the skid every time for maintenance. Thats why I was thinking mounting the welder above the box (depending on design, you could have at least one side exposed)Does anyone have know of any sort of oil change relocation kit? or maybe I could get the parts and custom fab it myself?, i have access to a crane at work so i wouldn't be a big deal to pull it out if I had to, but pulling it out just to do an oil change seems like alot of work...Thanks again, Pat
