I keep some stray stick electrode around that's  mixed and old, just  to use  as wire for whatever miscellaneous  non-welding  work.. Anyway, I grabbed a random old electrode and was going to flatten its end to make a tool of sorts. To flatten the electrode's end I placed it on the anvil surface of a vise and gave it a good whack with a 3lb hammer. The hammer practically whacked me back!  And the electrode practically went into a tune.   Fifty or more years of beating has hardly marred the vise's flat anvil surface, and now, this "mystery electrode" managed to put a deep gouge in it. The electrode wire stayed perfectly round and undamaged. No ID marks on the electrode but I think it's specialty a stainless alloy. Crazy huh? After the "sting" my wrist was too sore to take pictures.  But I'll try to get some later.Good Luck
Reply:The hardest rod I've ever used is Lincoln Abrasoweld. It's used for hard facing.
Reply:I've tigged LOTS of stellite. Super hard stuff. If you try and bend a rod it will just snap.Harder than chinese rithmatick.
