Hello I purchased a used Millermatic 250 and it is having some feeding issues. I was just wondering how to tell if the drive whees are bad or if the liner is bad or if it is both that should be replaced. I think if the wire bunches up at the beginning of the liner then the drive wheels are good but the liner is bad. And if the drive wheels slip then the wheels are bad but then the liner could be either good or bad. Is there any way to do a visual inspection on these items to determine which need to be replaced? Thanks.
Reply:You could dismantle the torch from the machine and gently blow out the liner from the torch tip end back toward the machine attachment end...DON'T ...DO NOT ..blow it into your wire feeder ! If it's dirty you'll just make a mess inside the machine which is not a good idea.OR... Just replace the liner...It's more likely the liner is gummed up than the drive wheels being worn out. Since it's new to you... you probably want to replace the liner anyway. Check the tip too it might be the wrong size or have slag on it. If your feeding .035 and using a .030 tip it isn't going to feed correctly..The drive wheels can slip if the liner is clogged or the tip is wrong or if the tip has a piece of slag stuck to the opening...not just if they are worn. They can slip if tension is not adjusted correctly too.Last edited by mudbugone; 08-10-2011 at 11:50 PM.
Reply:When the wire doesn't feed the drive wheels only have two choices, pile it up in a birds nest or slip, depending how tight you have the feed set. The drive wheels themsleves are pretty hardy and way down on the list of suspects when there are feeding problems. A guy can change the liner and make some limited improvements even when the liner isn't the problem, just old and dirty. A lot of feeding issues slowly disappear as a guy eventually gets more time on a new (to you) machine and gets more familiar with the ideal settings. Tip issues are more common than anything. Tips and settings. one other problematic area is small wire and warp speeds. Birds nests happen. Reply:I agree. When ever there are feeding problems. start with the tip, then the liner, then the drive rolls. Always keep your gun as straight as possible No sharp bends in the gun.
Reply:Thanks for all the replies. I have new tips so I will replace the liner tomorrow and just play with the settings some and see if that fixes it.
Reply:Some of those MM250s had adjustable drive wheels, meaning there is a way to align them in/out. I found mine fed a lot better when they were aligned. But your problem is probably due to the liner.
Reply:when i got my migmaster 275 i was having issues with birds nesting. I thought it was the liner, but i changed out the tip and it has been going fine ever since. Always start with the simplest first because the easiest to fix is generally the cheapest which means it is more likely to wear out.
