I have decided to use this old welder transformer body for my anvil. I have welded a 2" receiver on the side so that I can make a small removable welding table, maybe 20-24" square. I also want to build a removable frame for the 10" machine pulley in the picture, so that I can have a large curved surface to beat on, I want it to be about 10" off the top of the anvil top & have 2 supports resting on top of the anvil & be able to turn the pulley, or lock it in place, it does have set bolts in the pulley now. I have some 1.5 inch angle I can use for the bracket,  the ID of the pulley is 1.5 " so I need about a 10" piece of round stock for that. That's what I am planing for now, any creative ideas or suggestions are welcomed. Attached Images
Reply:That pulley looks to be an old implement drive belt pulley. If so, I would almost be willing to bet it is cast iron, which won't take much heavy beating on before it cracks or breaks. But if you mount another receiver hitch on the other side of the anvil you could mount it up like you have in picture 2 with the round stock between the two peices of 2" tubing. Then weld a piece of pipe on each side of each piece of tubing to run a rod thru either side of one of the spokes to hold it in a stationary position. Remove the rods to allow it to rotate. You will then need another piece of 2" tubing to serve as the support for the table, or use 2 supports for the table using both the receiver tubes like for the pulley. Do the wheels on the back of the anvil move/turn? That will be real handy when it comes time to move this anchor, I mean anvil.
Reply:One man's anchor is another man's anvil, thanks for the ideas. To answer your question, yes, the wheels do roll quite well, I think you are right about the material on the pulley, it was used on an old sawmill. It will stay right outside my shop door & I probably won't be doing any real heavy hammering on it, mostly shaping soft metals. I will leave the attachments inside when not in use.
Reply:One major disadvantage I can see using this "anvil" as a base for a welding table will be if you are working on something on the table and need to use the anvil, you have to move the table or squat down to work under it. Then put it back to work on the table again. I think you would be better off with a stand alone table next to the anvil. That way you can work on the table, go to the anvil and back to the table easily. I would opt for the separate table and definately larger than the 20-24" you mentioned. You are severly limited in what can be done on such a small surface, I'd go with 3x5' MINIMUM table top size. Mine is   42"x60" and it can get crowded in a hurry.
Reply:Everything you have pointed out makes sense, & good suggestions at that, however, keep in mind this is just going to be a small table for small projects to be welded outside. I currently have a larger table that I use inside the shop, I am an HVAC & Sheet metal man, so most welding that I do is  hobby stuff & I'm just having fun welding things together, while getting some practice at the same time. I just use things that I have laying around, or that I can acquire as scrap. I have access to a real anvil if I need to get serious on forging or beating, but this will serve me for most of what I want to do.
Reply:being what it is, the roller could be sold to a number of collectors that sell them or display them as artifacts of the past.  it has more value than an anvil that will break.
Reply:How much do you think it would bring? If I could get enough for it to purchase a more suitable piece I might be willing to trade.I did think about that, but as I said before it cost me nothing & I will only be using it for soft , thin metals to form shapes, so I'm not worried about breaking it.
