I was just wondering why pipeliners wear "pipeline" helmets like the one pictured below, instead of regular-shaped, auto-darkening helmets like most of us use. Attached Images-RuarkLincoln 3200HDHobart Stickmate LX235TWECO Fabricator 211i

Reply:Less reflection inside the helmet when Welding outside in the sun, at least that's why I bought mine
Reply:no pipeliner here but just can't help but throw my two cents in. the helmets are virtually indestructible, they are cheap, parts are cheap, lenses...cheap, the owners...just kidding. have you ever, on one of these threads heard from a pipliner that couldn't tell you to the day how long he has owned his hood? they are within a few shades of gray ( in a lot of cases) of those old (but still usable) lincoln machines they love so much. kind of the perfect accessory. since a lot of the oldtimer's wear them the young guys are reluctant to show up with their miller elites with the webs and flames painted on them. lol so their use is self perpetuating and a lot of those flaming digital elites are collecting dust in the garage at home.then again, i don't here a lot of screaming 'someone stole my hood'.ah, the old ways die hard. not all though, here's a thread from a while back. this guy pressure welder is on top of things. read post number 8 by pressure welder.  not a pipeliner but certainly a pipewelderhttp://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...or-some-adviceLast edited by ncountyline; 11-28-2013 at 08:43 PM.
Reply:I've used all kind of hoods in 20 plus years. I still keep my pipeliner handy. Huntsman 411P, miller pro hobby, jacksons with the big a/d, pancake.  All depends on what I'm doing. A/D for tight spots or precision work, fixed for goofing off or high amps. I love the huntsman eqc variable shade in a pipeliner or a blue wrapper lincoln supervisability.Every hood has a purpose. Weld 5p downhill and you'll know why most use a pipeliner with a piece of leather as bib. Reply:Most pipeliners wear pancakes, you don't see many pipeliner hoods on the row I'd say 1 in 10 wears a flip down hood most wear pancakes, too much light and too many sparks near your eyes. Only advantage is doing fab work you can keep your safety glasses on all the time
Reply:I would use the pancake but with hard hat welding hood rules on the job i cant. My old man pipelined most of the 70s and never owned a pancake.Sent from my DROID RAZR using TapatalkLong after the price is forgotten, the quality will remain. Both of my Poppy's 1954 Short Hoods -Third generation to weld with it and teaching a fourthSA 2## - Bought and sold more than I can remember or care to list, 8 in the shop right now
Reply:Well, I wouldn't call the auto dark helmets "regular helmets"... at all.If it ain't broke....I switched from an AD to a pipeliner hood and never went back. Except for my current job, I use the tiger hood because I need a flip front.
Reply:I'm using a small window pipeline type helmet on the job I'm on right now. I have an auto dark lens in it. The lens is mine. The hood is my employers.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:You don't generally need an AD lens when welding outside. The ambient light makes it bright enough to see through a 10 or 11 without a great deal of difficulty. The reason you don't see a lot of miller elites, etc on pipeline type work is that they are not rated for overhead welding, not at all. They would be destroyed in a very short time under a pipeline. The fiber metal hood is very stout in that regard and is as indestructible a hood as you can get.
Reply:The Pipeliner is light and compact. I use a Miller A/D lens in mine. I also like the fact that I can find replacement clear plastic lens' and a backup passive lens, anywhere. I just bought 2 more Pipeliner hoods because I got them at a deal I couldn't refuse. I am going to try the ArcOne lens this time and see which I prefer."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"
Reply:Those guys aren't real pipeliners, or they aren't in the US. They have the wrong hoods and the wrong stingers and some kind of funky coveralls on. The one on the right is using an air supplied hood, a real pipeliner wouldn't even acknowledge his existence. Here's you some real pipeliners:Last edited by TimmyTIG; 11-29-2013 at 01:04 AM.

The leather helmet is to firefighter as a pipeliner lid is to well... A pipeliner. As with anything; the "saltier" the better. Soot, burns and general thrash show battle time. Reply:You guys don't get it the pipeliner hoods are typically used on fab and plant work. Pipeline welders wear pancakes. I've seen guys drive off a job because they wouldn't let them use pancakes

Reply:I've worked pipeline work since 2000 and have only ran across a handful that don't wear pancakes
Reply:Ive also worked pipeline since 2000 and Ive only run across a couple of welders who DO wear pancakes.  A lot of guys working as field welders, albeit that's starting to change as tech gets better, don't use AD lenses because they can go out.  Theres nothing quite like the embarrassment of being on a job and having to take off because your AD lens took a **** and now you cant weld.  I know that one from experience.  When my lens went bad and wouldn't darken I had to take off and go buy another one.  The nearest place to get one was far enough away where I couldn't get back.  Havent used an AD on the job since.

Reply:Had my helper roll over a large piece of steel and the only thing it hit was my fixed lens. Fell out in  little shards. I was PISSED. Always carry a spare no matter what I'm using. I know posers that own pancake hoods and SA 200s but have never seen red rod before. They want to be something they are not. I have one but rarely use it. It's all about perspective. What you were raised with is different than someone else. The only hood my old man has ever owned is a pipeliner. Reply:those pancakes are good in cold weather cause your breath doesn't fog them up, and also good in bright sunlight, no glare from behind. I tried one for a while, but the first time I got a spark on my lip it went back in reserve.I've got an AD(Miller hobby), a leather bag(upside down welding) and a pipeliner type. With the AD I still catch myself nodding ! Pipeliners and politicians. Do the same thing every single day and never accomplish anything. Kinda a hope and chains thang.UH OH ! Reply:I'm no pipeliner but the ones who taught me liked the Fibre-Metal and Huntsman because they are very light, simple (you can buy a sling for a Wrist-Rocket slingshot at Walmart to replace the rubber band on a Fibre-Metal) and comfortable.Very nice if your neck has issues too.
Reply:Originally Posted by MinnesotaDaveThat sucks, but it's not really an AD issue - any helmet can break, get dropped, headgear strip, etc.  The only fix is to have a spare helmet with.  Love my AD but I still own fixed shades.I don't do much with welding outside my shop, but when I leave the comforts of indoor work - I bring extra's of common stuff that I cannot be without. Includes drills and grinders and such too.For the record, I'm not a pipeliner and do not know much of that world.
