Reply:It's going to be tough to do a quick change out of that valve.

Reply:Notice that it looks like the other side of the valve is in the same condition.

Reply:Oh I thought all those holes were to make the valve lighter lmfao.
Reply:You know, this wouldn't have happened if the pipefitter would have done his job right.
Reply:The holes are without bolts gaskets, and flanged cause they had to aim their golf clubs. LolSent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Reply:That's called a "maintenance saving valve". If it fails, you need a welder to swap it out instead of a maintenance guy, saving him doing the maintenance. As a mechanic I must say that's brilliant!

Reply:weldertom  It's kind of like pulling a trailer without a hitch.duaneb55 / Good eyes / #13.It's only a 150# line - JB may have of worked.Fortunately, this is real welding, examine the bead.If the top of the photo is up - the weld bead is a TIG weave - vertical-down . . . ?I believe this was shop welded, in a positioner, and installed.  This would explain the superior bead profile.I have never seen, or imagined a joint like this - but, I would hire the guy who thought of it. Reply:Is this a new pipe fitting method for building US Navy ships???  The sequestering is hitting us hard, but is this for real????What and where was this photo taken?   I am sort of thinking that if you had a chemical process for "nasty $hit" (chemical weapons), pipe flanges might not be your friend.  Just thinking out loud....The one in the back behind duaneb55's arrow has been changed out, see the metal covered rubber sleeve with hose clamps on each end. Reply:Just a thought.... but maybe it was planned that way. There might just be a couple of Dresser couplings on each side and not shown in the pic. ( at least I'm hoping so for the sake of the guy who designed it )
Reply:I'll venture to guess that this setup is for doing a hydro test.....temporary lines hooked up to fill vessel with water and then maybe pressurized.  Nothing fancy when it'll just be cut apart and reused somewhere else.

Reply:Could be that the installer was thinking,if this is stainless steel, that replacement would only involve replacing the stem and gate. My experience has been with gate valves ,that 90% of the time failure is with the stem and/or the gate.Ken Hood
Reply:They solder valves into copper lines all the time and lots of the old mills had valves welded into the steam lines. Is the problem that they are not supposed to weld to a valve that has a flange???Mr. HE

Reply:I've seen a lot of stuff like that when I used to do inspections on pipelines, in refineries and chemical plants.  I guess it is job security for welders and fitters!"All of this and some of that's the only way to skin the cat!"
Reply:can this really fly? i don't have piping experience save for minor repairs, if you were an inspector or job super would you let this pass??i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla
Reply:Originally Posted by TimmyTIGThey welded the pipe to the gasket face. Sure, they have weld in valves, but that ain't one. First time I've seen a 6" socket weld valve.
Reply:Cheap fast and easy is what that is! Guy would have had to weld flanges on anyhow so why waste the gaskets, bolts, and time?

Reply:[QUOTE=TimmyTIG;3431921]It all depends on what kind of code you're welding to. ASME 9, B31.3 etc. would never allow that. If you have a code that just says make it hold water, then it's fine.[/QUOTE  i work exclusively to the if it don't leak it's good code. i'm going to keep this trick in my back pocket. consider it stolen and filed.i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla
Reply:Not to be a smarty, but its actually the engineering design that determines what gets welded or bolted and to what code, etc. Even if the whole project is B31.3, a chief engineer can spec this kind of situation at his discretion.
