How do you pressure test a vessel. I'm talking air pressure.

Reply:Do a search on hydro-static pressure testing. It has been covered on here before. It involves using water in the vessel and practically no air for testing purposes, much safer than air pressure alone.
Reply:You haven't supplied very much information about what you are doing, but I'll try to explain the basics.To avoid a large explosion if it should fail, fill the tank with water, cap it, and then slowly add air pressure until you reach the test pressure desired. If the tank fails it will just make a wet mess and a small pop. The reason behind this is that air under pressure expands when it is released, but water doesn't. With only a small amount of air there will be no big bang. Reply:ACTUAL hydrostatic testing is conducted submerged in a tank of water. It has a graduated water column gauge on the tank. The pressure vessel being tested is submerged and pressurized with water up to its test pressure (usually 3x the normal working pressure) The expansion of the tank can be read via the water column on the test tank. There are different expansion requirements for different types of tanks.It's not about whether it simply "holds" the amount of pressure you want. It measures deflection of the tank walls at pressures far beyond the target working pressure, which is an early indicator of potential for tank failure.
Reply:Okay so it's a small tank that will hold oil and needs to be slightly pressurized. I filled it with water, then put the pressure to it,left it a little over 24 hours. I won't go into the specifics of the tank. Let's just say I've read all the warnings and I'm confident enough in my abilities to go ahead. The pressure needed will be 15 to 20 psi. I went to 50 psi.
Reply:Injection tank for a waste oil foundry by any chance?We really need to know what it's made of and how its put together... 11 gauge... Fine for 15 psi. Aluminum foil... Not so much.
