So I'm a junior in high school doing the tech welding program, I joined Skills because I knew it would be a cool thing to do if I could get into competition. So there are two welding classes in my school because there's many kids, plus one teacher teaches Oxy weld/TIG then you switch halfway through the year and go to the other teacher who goes over MIG/stick. But all in all both classes are divided in two shops that are basically together. Only 5 kids out of 27 kids signed up. This year we are sending two juniors and two seniors to compete at both levels. So to determine who we send out of the 5 people we have a class competition etc. It's pretty cool because one of my best friends and me are out of the 5 people. the other 3 kids elected me and my friend to be our class representative too! So we are leading our class for meeting's and other events. I thought it would be cool to share my experience so far as I'm happy. Though I still have a chance that i wont be able to compete if the other 4 kids beat me, but I am very confident that I will go to competition as I am best stick welder out of the 5 people and the whole competition will be on stick welding!
Reply:Thanks for sharing your enthusiasm and Good Luck!

Reply:Sounds Fantastic. I was in DECA my jr. and sr. years. Also had the competitions. I was VP of our group. A lot of fun I've never forgotten. Keep it up and good luck.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:That's great! Skills USA is a great program. I got to be a part of it and even had the opportunity to go to the national competition. It was quite the experience and a lot of huge companies get involved. I had many job offers after all was said and done. Don't try and be a better welder then the other guys. Instead find some of the best examples of flawless welding out there and try and copy it. Then you only have to be better then your last bead and perfection will come in time. Reply:This is great to hear. Skills is a great program it really teaches professionalism is the trades. I competed a few years back in the post secondary division in Illinois. Our test was Stick, Mig, and Flux Core. We took 3 students to state competition and took 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. Practice as much as you can do and don't go in with a big head. There will always be someone better than you. Go in and do what you know you can and have confidence. Best of luck. Let us know how it all goes.
Reply:I sure will do! For my junior year though we only do a local competition, with around 15-20 schools competing. The only process we will be doing is stick. It will be basically welding a piece of I beam all around onto a plate.
