Ok, so I rescued this dog memorial day last year, she was 8 months old.I started crate training her, but she wouldn't have it.After escaping the crate several times, I started using caribiners and hooks to make sure the she couldn't get out.  This worked for a while, but she is persistent.  She then flipped the crate over one day and escaped from the bottom, so I clamped the bottom also.  With no way to get out, she did this:So I did this and mounted it on ply wood so she couldn't flip it over: Then she did this:So as a quick and dirty fix, I just wire tied extra expanded sheet left over from the door and some chicken wire on the outside:Then she did the same thing on the other side, so I did this:As to why I can't just leave her out (in the house I just bought this February):Now, I plan on finishing the rest of the crate the same way I did the side (third pic from the bottom).  I need some ideas for mounting the panels together so I can still break it down and move it.I thought about just bolting each panel together, but maybe you guys have a better option? The crate in it's original form would fold flat without removing any panels.
Reply:If it wasn't of for the dog looking different I would have sworn this was my monster of a rescue mutt. We tried everything you have including the carabiners and every time we come home she would be out. She also knows how to open most human doors and free herself from a choke collar and a fairly tight rubber collar when on her run in a fenced kennel (and makes short work of the kennel too) Basically we gave up and put her in our bedroom and amazingly she does fine most of the time....oh yeah if you leave a water glass on the night stand she will finish the water in it too and not spill a drop, I find the empty glass in the middle of the bed. I am currently considering one of these shown below for the newest addition...... a pitbull who was used as a bait dog and was found with part of his face missing. These are a bit overbuilt but I admire the guy for his creativity. I will be building a lighter less demonic version, but I love the wrought iron cage thought. Reply:That's awesome.
Reply:Changing my design to something like that might be safer for her also, that expanded sheet is pretty sharp if she gets to clawing at it.  Don't want to come home to a bloody mess.Edit: with less spikes...
Reply:My rescue is not a fan of tight spaces either. He's a golden retriever. We bought an extra large crate for him. He ait through the side of it. I built a crate out of wood next to the steps in the garage for him that was 3x the size of the extra large crate. He ate through the ballisters. I walled it off with OSB so he couldn't get purchase with his teeth or claws but still had air and all that (gap at the top). He started eating the door which had an expanded metal  window. I made a metal door out of an old loft bed frame, (it eventually got turned into my light weight welding table.) He would chew on the door all day. but because it was round metal it wouldn't hurt him any. eventually we started just leaving him in the garage while we were gone. He was fine with that. then I made a kennel/dog run outside of the garage for him to go in and out of at his leasure.I'd stay away from the expanded metal also. besides, you'll probably spend less money using 1/2" angle iron than you would on the expanded metal.Last edited by ThorsHammer; 05-09-2012 at 12:36 PM.There are no problems. Reply:If you do it like Mick120's "hoist cage" but with round stock instead of wire, you could easily modify it to be something else when the dog no longer needs it. Look for some furniture glides for the bottom if it's going to be placed where the floor matters. That way you don't have to worry about sliding it off a hunk of carpet when the carpet gets to stinking.
Reply:You could get some pre fab fence sections from Home Depot and weld them together like a box.  Or, get the pieces yourself from a metal yard and weld up a "jail cell" for that mutt.  Here's a page from Home Depot on what they sell for pre fab'd fence sections.http://www.homedepot.com/Building-Ma...=fence&redAB=BSomething already made like this: A cheaper route might be some angle Iron pieces and wrap chain link around the angle iron.  Make a box out of chain link fencing.   Of course non of it would be "pretty looking" like the awesome crate posted earlier.  That thing is wicked medevil!!!! Reply:One thing I am glad to see on here is a lot of guys with rescue dogs, nothing fry's my *** more than hearing about someone's new 600 dollar "AKC blah blah blah" which is pretty unlikely to me anyway to see a real purebred nowadays. Too many puppy mills churning out so called purebreds when theres tons of good dogs waiting at the shelters. Not knocking the few reputable breeders that really take care and pride in their animals but the "nothing stands in the way of profit" puppy mills outnumber them 10 to 1. Sorry for the rant, but one thing I can count on everyday is my 3 rescue mutts waiting at the door when I walk in...... happy to see me, asking for nothing but a belly rub and food and water. They never ask to borrow my money or tools and are all too happy to go to work with me. Reply:I am amazed at what that dog has done, I have 2 rescue dogs as well one us a border collie/ German sheppard mix, the other is a pitbull (I'm sure the pit is a mix too but looks purebred to me) the most they have done is scratched the paint off the back door, chewed up a few feet of coax cable, and ripped a doggy door out of the drywall. I'm now in the process of fixing the dog door as that was last night, I'm also getting ready to build a gate/door that will keep them to our bathroom. (currently just open to the bedroom) as I want them to be able to get outside to use the bathroom, but it's way too hot to keep them outside while we are at work, so they need to be inside, and being locked in the house, they can't go to the bathroom, they are now 2 and 4 years old snd don't chew, so I'm not worried there, we have had both of them since they were little I would say they were about 2-3 months old when we got each of them.Offering CNC Plasma cutting and welding projects.Follow me on facebook https://www.facebook.com/nobigdeal.fabSupport those that support WW.
Reply:Yea, she is crazy.  When she has someone with her she is as sweet as can be.  But when she's alone, she goes nuts.I whipped this up in SketchUp.  I designed it to use 3/4"x16g square tubing, since I already have some of that that I was going to use for the old design and 1/2" round bar for the in between bars (need to price out the difference between that, square tube and angle).  Instead of the diamond plate that is shown, I'm planning on using the side that I've already built with the expanded sheet and cover that up with the existing floor pan.Thoughts?  Suggestions?
Reply:Jakkyl, I love your post. Really funnily done. Need a good laugh and that was it. Laughing with you, of course. The looks on the dogs face is priceless. Good for you, rescuing a Pit Bull with that kind of back ground. He/she is probably sweet as pie, save for probably pretty aggressive towards other dogs, and who could blame it. Maybe time and some good training and socializing will help, if they are aggressive. The breed is so mistreated and misrepresented, it's a real crime. My to boys are rescues and are the sweetest, big dummies you'll ever meet. They get along with anyone and any thing. It's our rescue Chi, "Taco" that is the real danger, but he's got better.  #1 - "George", AKA "Big Handsome" he was chained to a fence and left to starve to dead because he couldn't breed, antifreeze was coming that weekend because he wasn't dieing fast enough..... I hope the bastards next life is as a Reserve or Mexican dog.Add your own caption to George's photo......#2 - The Mrs. and the boys. George, Finnegan and Taco. We since added another Chi rescued from Mexico. Reply:forgot to address your break down question. Instead of using bolts use hinges. Pull a hinge pin here, and there, and it folds down. If you design the sides properly you might even be able to get it to fold flat like the original crate. There are no problems. There are only solutions. Reply:Love this post!!  A bunch of bad a** welders and wannabee welders all with a soft spot for rescue dogs. Great to know there are many of us out there who are willing to take the unwanted.....hypothecary hit the nail on the head...Dogs know you care,no two ways about it... all of mine were abandoned for ridiculous reasons.  Our Black Lab had a recurring ear infection that takes about 3 minutes once a week to take care of and the owner just dumped him out of the back of his pickup truck and left. When we got him he was scrawny and mangy with terrible ear problems from never being treated....fast fwd 2 years and he is one of the best looking Labs I have ever seen. Perfect coat, big blocky head and thinks he's an 80# lap dog. The Pit Bull who had been a bait dog and had a chunk of his face/nose  missing so you could see gums and teeth wants nothing more than to lick people to death and the female who can escape from any locked chamber as well as  Houdini ( and probably better if she had thumbs lol)  gets more compliments about her looks than any dog I have ever had (mutt but looks like a Bernese Mountain dog)  oh well enough ramblings, goodnight all. Reply:Needs clean up and paint. As far as keeping her in, this will work.  however, I did a trial run this weekend, making her think I leave the house, but don't actually leave.  She goes nuts as soon as she hears the front door close, I sneak upstairs and watch what she's doing.  She drools profusely, starts panting, barking, whining like she was being tortured or something.  But then she started biting and chewing on the bars and I'm afraid she's going to break her teeth, so I'm not leaving her in the crate until I can figure it out.No pictures of the welds because my phone sucks at close ups.
Reply:One word: concrete.  We have a rescue dog, aussie shepard mix who's canines were worn to the quick because he was chained outside the first three years of his life.  Had to have most of them removed. He had such bad skin infection that he literally had no hair except on the top of his head and face.  Bare naked otherwise.  Rescue group person talked the owner out of him.  Best dog in the world, except he learned to get up on the couch and knocks off the pillows so he can lie down.  Does it right in front of us and gives us "that look" that says "what?  did I do something wrong?"  Every day we come home the pillows are on the floor.  We figure he deserves it.  I don't know if it will work now with your dog, but when my other dog was a pup I would take him in the front yard every morning and play for 5 minutes before I left.  At 12 years, he still walks out in the front yard with me before I leave for work.  Then goes back in.  I wanted him to think of me leaving as fun time.Good luck.ps, about that bait dog mentioned and the other chained to a fence to die... all I can say is I don't get it.  I really really really don't.
Reply:Jakkyl, looks like you have the ambition for this project that I seem to be lacking lol. Make sure the dog cant get enough of its head out that it could choke. Another thought with the dog, if it is separation anxiety maybe try leaving it with some of your old clothes in the crate? Or try one of the Thundershirts available online, only about 30 bucks or so and works well for most dogs that are afraid of storms, seems as though they get worse as they get older in regard to loud noises. Reply:I tried leaving old clothes in there and she just shredded them.  Along with the bed I put in there, so now she gets nothing but a toy in there, but she just ignores that.
Reply:sounds like you need to have someone come into your house and work with both her and you. this type of service can be pricey, but it works. and as long as you can hold up your side of the bargain, the dog will hold up theirs. There are no problems. Reply:http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/story?id=2...1#.T7Gyyb9rc3oHere's some good advice that might help.  Note that part about creating "crate anxiety".  Dogs are weird animals.  If you can find a book by Richard Wolters, it really helps explain what motivates dogs.  Dogs are calmest when you are the leader.  They feel secure.Good luck!We had a mutt with severe seperation anxiety. He did similar damage to the carpets. For a while our solution was to never leave him alone. But then we got a second dog. Once he had a friend to be with he was fine.
Reply:You need to work with the dog and do some training with it... it may not realize that what it's doing is bad unless you discipline it.Miller Performance AD Helmet - Camo Edition Soon to have: Jackson HSL 100 - Forest Digi CamoMiller Thunderbolt AC/DC((Currently at welding school))
Reply:Our dogs are both rescues, like I mentioned before. They both have third safe place. And that it there crates. We feed them in the crates, and also leave the doors open when they are in there to eat, they will actually lay in them to sleep they do this on Thier own, I think the feeding in the crate has helped them learn that it's a safe place for them. They are comfortable and know it's not a punishment to be in one. Now don't get me wrong they are free to roam inside and out while we are home, and are only restricted to the crate when we are gone. We feed and water them before we leave, and it seems to help. It has worked for us as I feel they know they have what they need when they are in the crate, so it's more of a safe place than a punishment. Reply:why dont we just educate the doggies so we don't have have to caged them Attached Images
Reply:or how about this one for a houdini dog Attached Images
Reply:Why worry about seperation anxiety, just do like Romney, and strap the cage to the top of the car and drive a few thousand miles. "Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
