I am currently in Austria doing some job training to work on high altitude tower cranes and the company that im working for is requireing that I must pass a 6g pipe test on maybe 10cm diamiter pipe high tensil steel open root of course but the strange thing is they are requireing that the root be with 7018 3/32 with a 3/32 root opening. Most of my welding experience has been with pipe with high nickel contents and we have always tig welded or used 6010. Has any one ever heard of such a thing? if so can you guys lend some advice? thanks alot!
Reply:Yep, we have a 2" sch 160 open butt 7018 test as well. 3/32 rod, 3/32 gap and 3/32 land. You have to have your heat just right...too much and you'll blow through it, not enough and the root won't penetrate. Make sure to feather out your tacks really thin, as well as all your starts and stops.
Reply:Make sure you check procedure. Often the open root with 7018 is done electrode negative... much easier. I have tested on plate that way in the 1980's
Reply:thanks alot guys! the procedure says to use dcep and i was incorect about the rod clasification its like 11080 or something its a CrMoNi rod.but i am pretty sure i have it figured out...its very hard when the guy thats teaching you can only speak german haha
Reply:Probably 11018, but the concept is the same. |
