Help Welding Titainium

Figured this is a good place to start, for information on welding Ti.Never made an attempt to date, someone brought in a silencer for an MX bike I told him I would look into welding it for him. So any infor would greatly appreciated.Filler rod, preheat back gas, ?!Thanks,Karl

Reply:Welding titanium?Use titanium filler of the appropriate alloy to match or be compatible with the base alloy, if indeed the base alloy is a weldable one (not all titanium alloys are weldable).  Titanium has to be clean-clean-clean, before being welded.  Titanium really-really-really has to be protected from oxidation when it is being welded, that often means something like a 'glove-box' inert chamber, or careful back purging and trailing shields on the 'front' side.  The best laid schemes ...
