Just wondering what you guys think the scrap value on the AC only or an AC/DC model would be?
Reply:Value is probably higher as a working machine. The weight is from the iron core of the transformer..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:The transformer may have a copper primary and a secondary is aluminum.Newer units may be all aluminum. Like DSW said the main weight is the iron in the transformer core. To get the best price as scrap, all the different metals would have to be separated  from each other and the plastic. Taken in as a complete unit you will either get dirty junk price or electronic waste low price. Call your recycler  for a price quote. Might find you can get more on Craig's list.
Reply:There are 2 generations of Thunderbolts.  The early versions may have a whisker of copper in the windings.  The newer Thunderbolts ones will be basically all aluminum windings.  Scrap is roughly $200 a ton (2000lbs).  A Miller Thunderbolt weighs less than a 100 lbs so you will get maybe $15 if you scrap it whole as dirty metal.  If you work your tail off dismantling it and clean what little copper you find and scrap the leads plus strip the copper off those then you might get $20 total by separating all the metals.Senseless to scrap it when it will bring $100 for AC and $200 for AC/DC and sell quick to boot on Craigslist.
Reply:If you decide to scrap it let me know what you want for the dc side. ie diodes heatsinks, inducter, caps etc.Miller thunderbolt 250Decastar 135ERecovering tool-o-holic ESAB OAI have been interested or involved in Electrical, Fire Alarm, Auto, Marine, Welding, Electronics ETC to name a just a few. So YES you can own too many tools.
Reply:Pull the good components and sell those to people looking for repair parts, you'll probably make 5-10 times as much doing that as you would for scrap. Or if the machine works, post it up on craigslist for $150 and wait for someone to make an offer.
