Took some off the shelf simpson strong tie timber brackets and modified to our use. Will be blasted and powder coated before it is done. Will post a picture of the finished structure. It is going over an outdoor BBQ kitchen area.Finshed for the day with 3 tacked up and one completely welded. Attached Images
Reply:I got to remember to rotate the pictures before I post them.

Reply:Nice work!Like Dualie, back when we used to build houses here in the USA I'd make a few sets in any given month.Shew, I recall one bracket set we had to do for an octagonal timber framed roof structure. Reply:Nice job! I recently did the same modifications for our patio cover. Although.... I'm a cheap bastard and cut the straight "U's" in half before welding them to the post caps. I felt it looked more like what Simpson represented on their website. It saved us quite a bit of money building these versus paying and waiting for Simpson.
Reply:Finished welding the remaining brackets. I didn't weld along the bottom edge thinking it would be just more filler and not add much more strength. It would also allow water to drain through, although it is a covered structure with a standing seam metal roof. The bucket shape of the brackets are 1/8" thick. What is the opinion on welding all the way around or leave the bottom open? Also for those that wonder;Syncro 250, 220 set on the dial but controlled with the pedal. A ceramic cup that is to small. 1/8 tung (probably red, it was the only tungsten I had that was bigger than 1/16 and was a short piece at that). Filler was also 1/8, the standard ER70S-2. Probably a little large on both of those but I only had 1/16 or 1/8 to choose from in filler and tungsten choices of .040, 1/16 or the short section of 1/8 that I had.By the way, I am not a full time welder or in a weld shop. We are a facility that maintains and flys four helicopters. The welder is just there to repair equipment or make special tools. It can be months without turning on the welding machine but it is good to have it on hand. It has pulled us out of a jam on many an occasion. We also have a manual lathe and milling machine ... just for fun. Attached ImagesLast edited by patkenbar; 06-01-2012 at 01:13 AM.
