Just wondering if anybody can tell me what this rod is used for. It says ME-7018RS on the stick. I got about 30lbs of it given to me. It s hard to start and to keep it going but when I can get it going it lays a nice bead.

Reply:Regardless of the details, it's 7018 rod, and should be stored in a Rod oven at 250-300 degrees.  If it's been sitting out, it needs to be baked per specs before returning to storage in said rod oven.7018 rod that's been left out past a certain time is not legal for code work (probably why it was given to you) and will be more difficult to run compared to properly stored rods.

Reply:7018 is a Low Hydrogen electrode, with a highly hygroscopic flux.  Since water contains hydrogen, the presence of moisture in the flux makes it no longer low-hydrogen.  Hydrogen causes embrittlement, porosity, etc.  The only way to ensure that it remains moisture free is to keep it in a vented rod oven.Sealed tubes don't suffice.Desiccant packets don't really work either.  (imagine trying to completely dry a wet towel with a dry towel... you'll end up with two damp towels)

Reply:If your using them for lawn art, patio furniture, practice welding on scrap, fixing a fence etc... They'll work fine.  Judging by your question, you don't do nor ever will do "code work.".   I doubt you'll weld a trailer, trailer hitch, forklift, vehicle chassis, engine mount, jack stand, dune buggy, nuclear power plant, 747, skyscraper, spiral staircase, bleachers, backhoe,  or anything else critical with those electrodes.  So since you got them for free, use them for practice and/or non critical structured projects.
