Any of you guys ever get slag on the 7018 hotpass? Usually around the bottom quarters on the sides of the pipe of course. I'm having to grind that **** out. Any ideas what I could do to eliminate this garbage. No issues after the hot pass. Open butt root6010. I'd prefer not to deal with it and get busted. any tips would be great. thanks
Reply:Weave the electrode a little wider so that it goes in flat, that will keep the slag from getting stuck in the sides as badAirco Ac/Dc 300 HeliwelderMillerMatic 200 (stolen)Miller Maxstar 150STLMiller AEAD200LE (welding and generating power) Hobart MIG
Reply:I wonder if the bevel has anything to do with it. Are you using 30-degree, or more?Dont pay any attention to meIm just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:Ive been wondering if the bevels are causing it. They are indeed narrow. They are supposed to be 37.5. I increase the land to 3/32. 6" sched 40. no problem with the root just the slag when cleaning the hot pass. im capping after the hot pass. I was thinking to skate a hot pass in and run a fill but I think that would put me over flush. I remove the wagon tracks pretty much completely; I wonder if its how Im grinding the bead? never really had this much issue before. i'll try to mess with my amperage and weave a little wider and hold a bit longer. I usually get moving so I don't burn through. thanks for the info fellas
Reply:I'm no pipe welder, so take what I say with a grain of salt. I just wonder if you ran the hot pass with 6010, then capped with 7018. That way with 6010 the slag is easier to remove. The slag with a 7018 cap should be easy to remove. 7018 slag is always tough to remove in a tight bevel, needle guns work great for this in most cases.Dont pay any attention to meIm just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:My buddy uses a reciprocating saw blade. From the powered type not a hacksaw. He grinds the teeth off the handle and wraps it with tape. He runs his way around the toes on the bevels then hits it with a stringer bead cleaner wire wheel and good to go.I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
Reply:I use a broken piece of blade from my Ellis saw with electrical tape around one end to clean. But so far only on the cap with 6010. Attached ImagesDont pay any attention to meIm just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:Sounds as though you may be undercutting the root and trapping slag in the undercut. I would say watch for root undercut, and watch for stick angle. May sure you point into the sidewalls as you oscillate, don't just point straight ahead and move side to side.
Reply:I needed to weave a little wider. Theres always wagon tracks on the root. I just made sure to get out on the sides and it took care of it. I'd love to hot pass it with a 6010 but the procedure calls for a 7018 hotpass. I like to downhill it in when I can. i'll keep all in mind. I get a lil ancy on the hotpass and don't stay in the puddle good enough trying to skate up there. ive never tried the saws before. i'll try it sometime. it wouldn't leave a void to be caught on film would it? Anyway thanks for the tips. That **** aggravates me.
Reply:when trying to get 7018 in the narrow, I ALWAYS run 3/32 and really push that crap in there. travel speed nice and slow. running any bigger in a tight bevel, on top of a ground root= long arc= undercutbosses stuff:trailblazer 325maxstar 200my stuff:sa 200fronius transpocket 180100 amp Lincoln w/f97 f350 DITKevin
Reply:here is what I think is the problem. there are two things I see that may be going on. first is you may be too hot on your hot pass. over head is holding more heat than the other half of the pipe. Second is you most likely are long arcing the bottom and causing more heat than when you are on top. I would second the saw rake. I used a saw blade to rake my welds and it worked wonderfully. I hate a chipping hammer. all it does for me is beat the slag into the undercut and make it harder to get out. I rake my hammer over the slag. never beat and hit like a woodpecker.
Reply:as squirmypug said, all you need is a wider weave |
