I was at school and my instuctor said to push mig. I have always pulled mig and my beads turn out fine. When i pushed it there was ALOT of undercut and the weld was extremely large. Why did this happen? He says its okay to push it but from what i see its notSent from my iPod touch using Tapatalk
Reply:You have to make your torch more vertical, some 80 degrees or so. I don't agree with your instructor, but it is his class. Do as he says. Some people get on very well pushing steel.Alum is almost always pushed.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
Reply:At the tech school we teach pushing mig on steel with solid wire and gas. I can usually take anyone who can do a decent job pushing mig and get them to do a drag method, no problem. It's not true the other way around. Pushing tends to keep the heat input down vs drag. We have a number of companies that often hire out of the tech school day program that need to keep the total heat input down and the travel speed up for production. You can't do that dragging the bead.I'd really need to see picts and know the material size and settings to make comments on how to improve your welds. Undercut usually means guys aren't filling enough and moving too fast, or their gun angle is all wrong. One of the biggest issues I find guys have with pushing is that they want to sit behind the gun and try to look thru the nozzle. You need to get your head out in front of th gun and look down the barrel to see well. You can't work the puddle efficiently if you can't see well..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:My instructor allowed us the choice to either push or pull. With solid wire on 100 CO2 or 75/25 mix I had better luck with pulling. He preferred us to pull because it has better penetration. I tried to push the puddle and I couldn't find a rhythm. Can you give us more specifics? Scott |
