I’m trying to restore some old tools and I noticed a crack on a chisel after cleaning it up. I would like to use my small wire feed to fix it but I wonder if I can weld it so that it’s not noticeable and if I may need to buy some special wire or something. It will be left unpainted as it was originally. I also have a small AC welder available if I half too.
Reply:the short answer is no.  It'd be very difficult, if not impossible to disguise the fact that you welded that cracked handle.Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector

Reply:Are you planning on using it, if so not on a chisel bud. But to restore it yes. I could get that no problem to look brand new like it was never repaired. Im not patting myself on the back tho bud, i have probably done way over a thousand of repairs like that in my life with multiple ways of getting the desired finish.I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys

Reply:It is likely not a crack, but rather the original forge weld. Leave it, the force put on i from wood working will do it no harm.
Reply:That repair would be a good candidate for silver soldered after thorough cleaning.    Bob
Reply:Throw it away, seriously. A split chisel can come apart and bad things can happen. Not worth the risk. Pitch it.

Reply:I was thinking what TSCGG13 said about it being unsafe and I just want to add that a properly sharpened wood chisel doesn’t take much force to cut and I would never be using a hammer or anything like that.

Reply:Cleaning   KLEANSTRIP sold at Home Depot.  Does a great job on rust. It's been mentioned here by others.  Do a search if your interested.  Bob

Reply:Originally Posted by FarmerboyI would question if it is crack either,   before I would start welding or soldering I would make sure it is a crack, and you weld it most likely one could destroy the temper in it,   with a wood chisel I would clean it up and make a new handle for it and use it,   I have use a lot wood chisels and if the steel is going to split or give, then the handle will be tooth picks,   one does not use a wood chisel with a hammer if used correctly a mallet yes, but not to beat it in to some thing but to work it through the wood,
Reply:I would V out that crack and TIG weld it with 309 stainless.Tack it first at the open end and in the middle.Start the weld at the open end.AWS certified welding inspectorAWS certified welder

Reply:See, wutcha need to do is to grind out the crack to the root, figure whether or not you're gonna fill it, then set it to forhire, so he can precision-grind it to a factory OD.-AaronJet 17.5" Drill Press1942 South Bend 16x84 Lathe1980s Miller 320A / BP --- 2013 Power Mig 2562012 Jet 7x12 Horizontal BandsawVictor O/A Setup
Reply:Before I welded on it or ground it I'd make darn sure it was a crack and not a mark left over from the original manufacture.(See Walker's comment)Clean(sand blast) out the inside to see if it extends all the way though or use some dye. Maybe clamp it in the vice and see if you can pry the crack open(but that might break out a chunk if it is really a crack).---Meltedmetal
Reply:Thanks, I don't think I want to try prying it, but I guess I can work on cleaning out the inside to see if I can see a crack
