I have a neighbor that has a huge pile of galvanized big heavy angle from what I think was a cell tower. Can the galvanized plating be removed easily? I can buy some for projects but I need non galvanized material. I don't just want to grind areas to be welded. For the projects I have in mind I want it galvanize free.
Reply:The short answer is no, not by any conventional method, let alone "easy".."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt
Reply:Muriatic (hydrochloric) acid, like you find at the hardware store. Dilute it, the solution doesn't need to be full strength. Are you looking to strip all of it or just the ends? Unless you want bare metal for aesthetics reasons I'd leave the coating.
Reply:Part of it would be cut down into 1/2''x6'' flat strap for my welding table top. If I did this I would want it stripped to bare metal. The next problem would be cutting one side off without warping it. Probably a bad idea but it's just up the road and cheap.
Reply:I would use it, make your frame with the verticle leg in. Put 2 pieces of angle back to back and bolt together about every 8-10 inches. An old school sanding disc would make quick work of getting the coating off the top surface and where you need to weld. Just do it outside and use the wind to your advantage . Leave a space in your Tee sections and you would have a good holdown system. That table would be heavy but I think it would be at least as strong as using a real heavy plate top.Miller xmt304, Miller S22 p12, Miier Maxstar SD, Miller 252 w 30A, Miller super32p12, Lincoln Ranger 9, Thermal Arc 181I with spoolgun, Hypertherm 10000 ,Smith torches. Reply:With angle iron you've got the radius in the corner area that you have to think about. To cut one leg off without getting into the radius you'll maybe get 5 inches and it will likely come off curved a bit. Thinner and narrower strips end up looking like saber material. Leaving any of the radius and there will be a lot of grinding. That stuff will be hot dipped with alloyed layers. Large sections aren't going to clean off quick and easy with acid I don't believe. The pure zinc layer maybe but there's a lot more with hot dipped than there is with a hardware store bolt."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt |
