Im building some parts out of brass that ranges from .25" think up to .75". I have a Mapp gas/oxygen kit and torch to do the job but I need a little help with what type of filler rod I need to buy, both size and material? Obviously the joints need to be as strong as possible so if there is a strong materail to use as my filler I would rather that. Thanks in advance! This is a wonderful site with tons of info! I went to my local library to try and research and figure this out on my own but had no such luck...if only I would have kept my notes from metals class in high school
Reply:what kind of parts?is saftey anywhere in this equation?.. silver solder works great ,but not if the parts are needed in critical components..can you supply more info and of course some picturesOf all the things I lost I miss my mind the most...I know just enough about everything to be dangerous......You cant cure stupid..only kill it...
Reply:Im assembling parts for a brass tattoo machine. Very simple in design with only 3 sections that need to be brazed together to completer the frame. I normally make them out of steel but I decided to make a few in brass and Its been awhile since I brazed anything. Thanks againThese are steel parts but its the same thing I cut out of brass.
Reply:I braze brass 0.020" wall tubing inside steel tubing using 56% silver brazing rod for internal cable routing on bicycle frames. If you need a little bit of a fillet for some extra strength, you could use 45% silver or 50N silver. But the temp is a little higher. I would try it on some scrap brass that you have to assure that you aren't getting too close to the melting point of the brass and distorts it. Judging by the part thickness that you have there though, I don't think you'd have a problem.
Reply:WOW beautiful work!!! So I will pick up some 56%, 46%, and 50N sticks and give them a try. What diameter should I buy or is it just one size for those filler rods? Also what type of flux would you recommend.Sorry for all the questions but you guys are extremely helpful!!!
