I want to weld a polished stainless petcock tube to a mild steel gas tank. When the tank is painted, the painter will mask the polished tube off so it looks like chrome, and paint the rest of the tank. When I weld the tube to the tank, should I use steel rod or stainless rod? I understand that no matter what, the painter will need to paint up over the weld because of the mingled steel.
Reply:Use stainless, preferably 309. If you can't find 309, my second choice would be 316L.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea. |
