Anyone in the Illinois or Midwest who fabs marine fuel tanks?

I would have loved to make my own, but after commencing research here which led me to USCG and other research sites, I've quickly and easily come to the conclusion to purchase a tank from a USCG Approved manufacturer.  So, any of you guys do this and are nearby to Chicago, IL?My current tank is steel, 36" long, 30" wide and 10.5" tall.  Replacement does not have to be steel; aluminum is fine.I have an extra 4" in the back (stern facing) and 4" in the front (bow facing), but I think as long as I keep the replacement to no more than 40" long, I'll be able to reach the front tabs and still not be too far astern with the tank.  Last edited by deerhuntre; 06-11-2012 at 08:45 AM.
Reply:Just curious, does the Coast Guard regularly inspect fuel tanks, and, have they ever inspected your tank? Ive read some of the regs for USCG specs but have trouble thinking they actually board a private pleasure boat and check them. I guess they probably run out of things to do once in a while thoughSafety 3rdGump
Reply:Well, I can't imagine they ever would, however, others have pointed out insurance coverage and liability as an issue.I certainly could construct the tank and pressure test it, but I'm just not convinced its the best thing to do.I am open to ideas and suggestions as well!!
