I was just wondering of some new rods to try out and i wanted to see what other peoples favorites were. My favorites so far are Atom Arc 7018 and lincoln 5p (the red rod) for 7018 and 6010. What do you recommend and what are your favorites?thanksAaron
Reply:What type of welding machine are you using? My generators, (SA-200s) don't really seem to care one way or the other. My inverters are snooty. My Dynasty doesn't like anything to do with Lincoln, but loves ESAB's Atomarc 7018, and Sureweld 10P-Pluse. The Invertec likes Lincoln's Excalibur 7018, Sureweld 10P-Plus, and Hobart's PipeLiner 60. The Everlast loves AtomArc 7018, and 10P-Plus. These inverters are like dealing with a bunch of women!Dont pay any attention to meIm just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:My favorite brand of 7018 is McKay. Man that stuff runs smooth. But it's getting hard to find. But I do like Atom Arc and I like Hobart 418, but its hard to restrike. I just bought 150 lbs. of Lincoln Jet-LH 78MR in 1/8" I won't be using it for awhile so I won't be able to comment. But I hope I like it.As far as 6010, I have only used McKay 6010PM and I liked it. I'm out so I am going to try 5P+ Lincoln on recommendation from XtremeFab."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"
Reply:Stickman... swing by our place and I'll give you a handful of 5P and let you play some music with the 300D. 3/32 or 1/8 your choice. Bunch of red rod too to see what you like side by side. I've ran the 5P and the 6010 "red rod" both. Pretty sure it is completely opposite what supposed to be but the "red rod" seems to run "cleaner" for me. Not a big difference but the 5P did seem to dig a little bit more. Either one though you watch the puddle and things come out good in the end. It's been a long time since I've ran any but as I recall the Hobart, I think called Pipiemaster, was some really nice running stuff. Should try to get my hands on some again and see if my memory serves correctly. Lincoln Excalibur...for some reason it is really picky at the starts but otherwise nice. Esab Atom Arc just plain nice.AlA man is judged by what's between his legs...always ride a good horseMiller DialArc HFLincoln Classic 300DThermal Arc 181iPowermax 45Scotchman Ironworker(2) BridgeportsOkomota Surface GrinderAutoCAD 2010
Reply:im running a miller dynasty 200dx and im pretty sure that 5p is the red rod and 5p+ is the grey stuff that i dont care much for. and yeah the red 5p digs a lot more, i ran the 5p and 5p+ next to each other doin flats and a vertical weave and the 5p definantly dug more than the 5p+ especially with the vertical weave. im going to try out some lincoln excalibur 7018 MR later today and see if i like it, they say it has a "square coating burn off" which i dont know what that means but im gonna find out hahathanks for replying Aaron
Reply:My preferences on any machine I've ran, are Lincoln Excalibur 7018 and 5p+ 6010. At home I burn crappier Hobart rods, their 7018 is okay once you get it running and 6011 is acceptable, but the new Hobart 6010 is rubbish. Lincoln rods FTW, although Id sure like to try some esab sometime here...[Account Abandoned 8/8/16 Please Do Not Attempt Contact Or Expect A Reply]. See you on YouTube! -ChuckE2009
Reply:I vote for Lincoln Excalibur 7018. Man, can you tell the difference!
Reply:I mostly use Lincoln and ESAB, Excalibur and Atom arc 7018, 5P and 5P+ for 6010. I haven't burned much Hobart or McKay rod, but they are both divisions of ITW so I wonder if there's much difference between the two.I've also used a variety of other rods for stainless, cast iron, etc. but not enough to form much of an opinion as to brands. I will say, though, that Blue Max stainless rods are the smoothest rods of any kind that I have runJohn.A few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
Reply:Hobart 418 in the sealed can for 7018, Lincoln 5P+ or Hobart Pipemaster Plus for 6010.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:Tozzi,,,,how's the Pipemaster compare to 5P+? Much difference? Best I recall it was really clean burning but has been years since used some on a job.AlA man is judged by what's between his legs...always ride a good horseMiller DialArc HFLincoln Classic 300DThermal Arc 181iPowermax 45Scotchman Ironworker(2) BridgeportsOkomota Surface GrinderAutoCAD 2010
Reply:I like it better than the 5P+ it burns clean and square and no hang nail.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:I've found that the Hobart Pipemaster 60 burns more stable at lower amps than the Lincoln 5p, or 5p-Plus. This really helps me when putting in open root vertical up. The Pipemaster 60 and 10p-plus are really close, but I'll stay with the Hobart rod.Dont pay any attention to meIm just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:5P+ gives me no hang-nail whereas 5P does... Excalibur is the only 7018 rod I would spend my own money on... Reply:I'm in the process of searching for the 'best' electrodes for me.From this thread, I've heard opinions that the reoccuring favorites are:6010: Lincoln 5p (red) or 5p+ (grey), ESAB Sureweld 10p+ and Hobart PipeMaster 60 or PipeMaster Plus (are these different rods?)7018: ESAB Atom Arc, Lincoln Exclaiber and Hobart 418In my local area, others have their own opinions and I share what they told me... as they said it.Arc-welding instructor here said, Air Liquide Blueshield 7018 is what most local industries use.Welder repair guy in Cormwall said ESAB Atomarc 7018 is what industries there use.Today I visited the local Air Liquide store and had a walk around in the store room; it hardly carries anything but their own Blueshield brand but they did have some ESAB Atomarc 7018.My visit to the local Linde/Boc store took me into their storeroom. They carry their house brand and some EASB - just Sureweld 10p+ (6010) and Atomarc 7018 (said one company in town won't use anything else), some Lincoln (but no Excalibur 7018 - guy said to me that only hobbiest ask for that - don't blame me; that's what he said) and they did have some Hobart 418 in plastic boxes.Hobart? Can someone explain to me the difference between Hobart and Hobart Brothers? Also, TSC stores carry Hobart and I've seen 6011 and 7018 and 7018AC but I never saw any 6010 (PipeMaster 60 or PipeMaster Plus) or any "418" mark of 7018. Any explanation?Rick V 1 Airco Heliwelder 3A/DDR3 CTC 70/90 amp Stick/Tig Inverters in Parallel1 Lincoln MIG PAK 151 Oxy-Acet
Reply:Lincoln Excalibur 7018-1 and Lincoln 5p+ as well
Reply:??? Lincoln site shows all versions of their 7018 available in metal cans only, yet in the stores I've only seen a few versions of these rods and they were always packages in rectangular cardboard boxes. Any explanation? Also they show 6010 5P and 5P+ as available only in metal cans; is this true?Rick V 1 Airco Heliwelder 3A/DDR3 CTC 70/90 amp Stick/Tig Inverters in Parallel1 Lincoln MIG PAK 151 Oxy-Acet
Reply:The Hobart (as opposed to Hobart Brothers) rods at TSC are their home/farm user line. The Hobart Brothers rods at the LWS are their professional line, and come in sealed metal cans.Similarly, Lincoln sells rods in 5 lb. boxes in big-box stores, but the LWS will have 10 and 50 lb. cans. You won't find 6010s at big-box stores because they are used mostly by pros and will not work on AC machines.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
