Hey all-It's always the beginner that blames the equipment but how can I tell if my helmet is working properly? It's one of the first ones that came out in 1995 or 96 - the 9-13 knob never seemed to do much and I always have had a really hard time seeing what I am doing - usually I end up so close my shield hits the back or side of the tig torch. This is obviously not good for the back...I bought it for SMAW welding but now use it for tig also. I usually weld outside if that matters...Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:Grab a striker for your torch set. The sparks will darken the lens instantly, but momentarily.I always test mine in the morning. If I was not welding for a few daze it may not work. 15 minutes in the sun or....running a bead with my eyes closed, charges it right up.Bubble gumTooth pixDuct tapeBlack glueGBMF hammerScrew gun --bad battery (see above)
Reply:As far as on and off, a bright light source like the sun or powerful overhead lights will usually trip the AD and cause it to darken. that's how I Typically check mine to make sure the batteries are working.Shade darkness I really don't have any good suggestions except to compare it to another hood. Even that is of questionable value as the optics on some hoods are better than others. Keep in mind that some hoods just don't always work well with tig either. You might want to take a minute and add your location to your profile so we know where you are located. You might find someone here local who is willing to let you compare your hood with theirs..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:Turn your helmet on and grab a grinder and start grinding if it doesn't darken then I wouldn't use it.Lincoln pro core 125 14''chop saw7 inch grinder,2-4.5 inch grinders, electric die grinder.Half inch drillAnd alot of hand tools
Reply:Torch striker should make the lens darken.
Reply:I use an old TV remote to test my speedglass.
Reply:The lights over your head will do it. In fact that's the proper way to set a helmet. Face it to the lights turn the sensitivity until it darkens then back it off a few degrees.Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer
Reply:Thanks all! I am in Ohio. It darkens for sure, the problem is it's too dark!!?!Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:Get a new helmet. You are using 20 year old tech.I test mine with a butane lighter only because I smoke and always have one in my pants pocket, but a striker will do.Don't laff, but I've got several Harbor Freight AD helmets laying around, and their 9-13 adjustments actually work very well for my occasional use.I use plain old cutting torch goggles for plasma
Reply:Throw those electric hoods in the garbage and learn to weld |
