Reply:I built my own rock crawler from scratch.  TBI 350 (simple and runs at any angle auto adjusting for altitude etc), th350 modified to run at VERY high angles, stacked transfer cases, 1 ton axles with alloy shafts, home designed/built (properly engineered to work) 4 link, and 42" IROK tires on bead-locks.  Great fun.  Both my son (who helped me build it) and my little blond haired blue eyed daughter could out drive lots of the guys, with nerves of steel, and didn't think we had been wheelin' unless we had been on the lid at least once.  Good times.  But my son grew up and couldn't think of anything but girls and money, and my daughter loved to wheel but didn't want to work on it.  Eventually I got tired of doing all the hard work alone and sold it.  I can't overstate the expense or dedication in terms of time that one of these things takes.  It's like machine tools.  The obvious entry expense is a bait-n-switch, the real money is in the tooling and can easily double or triple your investment to make it functional.  So make sure you are wanting this bad and totally committed, or that you have the self discipline to hold the line from always wanting to take it further.  I did fine on the former as long as I had the help of my son, and as I learned about myself, I am unable to resist the urge to go further with the build.  Every obstacle that I couldn't conquer was a challenge I could not resist.  So it was always the next project, and in the end, with accumulated fatigue in the system AND my inability to back off from an obstacle, more and more it became breakage on every trip.  I now have what I call an "expedition rig" and refuse to go "hard core" at all.  There is not a straight panel on it, so no stress about damage, but it is intended to be over built for ANY scenic trail and multi-day desert expeditions.  Even that I seem to have trouble allocating energy to keep up AND make time to use, but that's mostly due to the over commitment on what will one day be a fantastic home/property that is currently still a fixer-upper (bought out of foreclosure).Take this for what it's worth from someone who spent the last 15+ years on that path.  This is not a casual hobby unless you have money to burn and hire out a lot of the work.  If you do it, do it to have fun, and that means doing it RIGHT.  Cutting corners at all leaves you stranded with a broken rig and a ruined weekend.  In my experience usually breaking on the first day of a 3 day event.  In the end I was buying CTM knuckle joints for the D60 that cost almost $300 a pop and putting them in axles shafts where the stub shaft cost $700.  And I didn't have money to burn, so breaking them, and I did, not only ruined the weekend but also put the hurt the bank account.
