Just bought my first firearm tonight. Has anyone here built a gun rack that they would like to show off?I'm thinking something simple, wall mounted, piece of metal on the bottom to hold the back of the rifle, piece in the middle and a hinge that will swing open and closed with a lock.Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer
Reply:I would invest in a metal cabinet that locks. I have my guns in one of the locker style that holds 12 guns. It was about $150 on sell. Unless you know every single person that may have the opportunity to enter your home and know what type of people they are dont leave your guns out on display. Good way to have your guns walk off when you are not at home. Out of sight, out of mind.Making as much progress as a one legged duck in the middle of a pond, just going in circles.

Reply:Actually is almost sounds like a horizontal version of the shotgun rack that's usually found in a police squad car. One of my "around to" projects is to make up some sort of similar rack for a female friend of mine. She wants to keep her late husbands shotgun above the door in the  bedroom closet so it's easy to access, but out of sight and not readily accessible to her young daughters friends if they are over to play. Personally I think an off the shelf commercial unit would be a better choice, but the ones I've seen so far won't fit well in the very small closet..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:I built a gun safe inside the shell of an old round top classic refrigerator. It came out great, looked just like a typical garage fridge from the outside. It had a simple key lock on the door but when it opened there was a full on gun safe door behind the outer door .It could be bolted to the wall from the inside of the safe. I had to sell I it before my last transfer (military), it was redicously heavy. I made out very good money wise. It is on my list to build another when I retire.I have some pictures of it on my old camera, wherever that is...

Reply:All my guns were locked in a safe I had alot of money in firearms inside it. It was bolted to the concrete slab in a spare bedroom, but I got worried that someone would take them so I loaded up the safe in my little wooden boat took out to the middle of the lake and sunk it. Now I know they are safe. No one can get there hands on them. Now since I don't own firearms anymore  I'll give my advice. I'm assuming you have a long gun (aka rifle or shotgun) I don't need an answer but what did you pay for it? Think about that for a second. I had guns that cost me over $1500 each. There is no way I would ever consider a "cheap" locker or lockable gunrack. I would not trust a $150 locker for a $500 gun, let alone a $1500 gun. Because once you become a gun owner you become a guns owner before you know it. And next thing you know your $150 locker has $3000-4000 worth of guns in it. And that gun locker can be cut open with a cordless drill, a hole saw and a set of tin snips. The safe o used to have would have required a torch or plasma to cut open. And in that instance everything inside would be useless. Keep on mind the goal is to retain your gun in the event of a burglary. It's you property and your liability do as you wish. This is just my thoughts. I had the cheap gun lockers too, but it was for ammo storage, but I sunk all the ammo with my guns. Welcome to the sickness. It's a great hobby, but it's like anything else you gotta be smart about it.Offering CNC Plasma cutting and welding projects.Follow me on facebook https://www.facebook.com/nobigdeal.fabSupport those that support WW.
Reply:I'm guessing that, like most first gun purchases, yours is a 12 gauge shotgun, primarily intended for home defense. If this is the case, disregard everything everyone's said about safes. A home defense weapon needs to be readily accessible, with ammunition nearby.  A shotgun in a safe with a combination lock in a dark closet will do you NO good if someone kicks in your back door at 3 AM.The best place for a home defense weapon is, like you're planning, a bedroom closet, out of sight, but readily accessible.  I'm personally fond of a horizontal rack just above the door frame on the inside of the closet, where someone would have to go inside the closet to discover it's there. The flip side of this is having kids around.  While yours is still small, they get bigger, and they get curious.  Having it up high is a good start, but there's no substitute for teaching kids respect, responsibility and safe use of firearms.  Kids play with guns when they're curious.  When they respect them, understand the use of them, and understand the consequences of using them, they won't get curious and try to learn on their own.

Reply:I'm not sure if the guns for self defense or just to shoot. but i would definitely keep it a gun safe and bolted down so know one knows about it. And also don't keep the ammo with the gun keep it separate. Reply:Holy $^&!, no one really answering your question without going off on some other tangent.   Yes, I have made a gun rack.  I sold it with my last house.  Currently, I am making a new one with channel iron, a base and top portion and a shotgun lock system in the middle.  This rack will be mounted in my walk in closet in the house, using security one way bolts.  The shotgun rack I'm building weighs in so far at about 35lbs.  I will take a picture of it (unfinished, mind you) and post it here within the next day or two.  I'm currently away from home.   The shotgun in my bedroom will be locked in the gun rack just in case I have the oportunity to grab it, instead of a handgun that may be closer in reach.  Geeze, there's way too much "if....if.....if....if" here on this topic.  "IF"....Grandma had balls, she'd be Grandpa!    It's not that difficult to build a gun rack for the house/office or whatever.  How, when and where one should load the dang thing; chamber loaded/unloaded  is for a completely different thread.Lincoln Power Mig 216Lincoln AC/DC-225/125Miller  625 X-Treme PlasmaMiller 211 Forney 95FI-A 301HF 91110Victor Journeyman O/PMilwaukee DaytonMakita  Baileigh NRA Life Member
Reply:Take a look at the Sturdy Gun Safe Co. It's a heck of a gun safe or if you prefer to call it a RSC, residential security cabinet. I purchased one a year ago and sing nothing but praises on quality, fit and finish. I talked with the owner when I placed my order, he saved me $280.00 off what the website had it listed for. sturdysafe.com Good luckGod speed Happy welding Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk 2
Reply:I wouldn't buy a gun safe for one dayem gun unless I had immediate plans to purchase more right soon. There should be some cable lock affair that would be sufficient for an intermediate level of theft/safety."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt
Reply:Here's my pics............... still a work in progress.  I still need to drill the holes in the steel, to mount the piece into wall studs.  The rack will hold one shotgun.  The base plate is mounted to the bottom and the locking mechanisim is bolted to the gun rack and can't be accessed without the gun removed from the rack itself.    I still need to powder coat the rack before I mount it in the closet.   The below pics were taken in my shop and NOT the walk in closet I'll install it in.  Sure, anything can be defeated, but the purpose of this gun rack is to securely have the gun locked up from little fingers and to delay and obstruct a crook from just walking off with the gun.  I have two large gun safes and 99% of my guns are locked up in the safes.  They can be defeated too.  The purpose of a safe or gun rack is just to buy time and hopefully thwart off a home burglar before the home alarm brings the cops over.  Nothing is 100% burglar proof. Reply:Ok thanks for all the info. To answer some questions, yes of course my daughter will learn hand gun safety. However right now she is only 2 so I have to wait for her to be older. Yes it came with a lock, and in a soft case and on the top shelf of the closet where nobody can see it. I do plan on getting more so that is why I want a safe. Plus it will have the lock that came with it on and in the safe. Can never be too careful.I found a metal cabinet at cabelas for $109, so I'm going back today to see it and get more rounds.SuperArc, I love that one you built, where did you get the lock from?Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer
Reply:I don't believe kids can ever really be "too young" to learn about gun safety. If they are capable of moving on their own and understanding even basic concepts, they can learn about gun safety, even if it is as basic as "don't touch". Also the earlier they learn, the less likely they'll be scared of guns.I was over having dinner with a friend of mine last year when we heard a loud bang. His wife immediately asked "Was that a gun shot!?". Highly unlikely in a fairly rural suburban neighborhood in June. Just kids up the street playing with fireworks. But his 5 year old daughter ran screaming up stairs yelling someone was going to kill her, because Mommy has brainwashed her daughter that all guns are "bad" and that "guns kill people". ( a bit strange for some one who grew up with a father who hunted with firearms on their farm up until a few weeks before he passed away at 85 and never had a firearms incident in his life.) I had a long talk with my friend the next day about how important it is that he teach his children basic gun safety even though his wife won't allow guns in the house. They need to learn that guns won't kill people on by themselves. It's careless or dangerous people with guns that are the problem, not simply "guns".TV and the media are teaching kids all the wrong things about guns. Most of it is BS movie gimickry. The only way to combat this is by teaching kids the truth about guns and it really can't happen too early. The NRA's Eddie Eagle program has a lot of good info about teaching kids about gun facts and safety even at an early age..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:^^It's all about HOW you teach them. I learned safety as a kid when my dad got me my first bb gun. My ex gf is not so smart. Her dad is a big gun guy, has a lot, goes hunting a lot. Her sister is a cop and carries a glock, however my ex never got any lessons for either of them. I showed her the gun and she thought it was cool so I put it in her hands, I turn around to let the dog outside and turn back around and she is pointing it at my pretending to shoot me.Surprised the **** out of me. Guns all around your family and you never learned to never ever point a gun at someone. WTF! Me and her dad are going to have a talk this week for sure. While at the range this weekend, the couple in the booth next to use was shooting and she had a nice little pink gun. Looked like a 9 or 40 but anyway had the thing pointing at me while she looked at it. I immediately jumped out of the way and went to the other booth where she couldn't point it at me. Another thing I noticed is there are no cameras in the range at this place we went to.If you have a firearm and have it at a range, if you are not pointing it down range, then you place it facing down range on the table. That is how I was taught. This chick was turning around kneeing down putting the magazine in and doing all sorts of scrap crap.Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer
