If you're stick welding a filet weld (T-joint) in a flat position, what kind of bead would be produced by holding the stick at too low an angle?  Say, instead of 45 degrees, holding it at 60-70 degrees (closer to the horizontal piece)?  Would it be more likely to undercut the vertical piece and put more bead on the horizontal piece?Last edited by Ruark; 11-17-2011 at 10:18 PM.-RuarkLincoln 3200HDHobart Stickmate LX235TWECO Fabricator 211i
Reply:If zero degrees is the rod laying flat on your workbench, and 90 degrees is the rod pointed straight down at your workbench, a 20-30 degree rod angle (what you're calling a 60-70 degree angle) would have penetration issues on the flat part of the fillet joint.  Undercut in this case would be a problem of too much amperage or travel speed being too fast.  Bead location would depend on rod manipulation, but I would expect to see more bead on the vertical piece than on the flat piece.
