Hello, I am attempting to build a rack over an old military M105 Trailer. The purpose of this rack will be to add a roof top tent, total weight would be me (220 lbs) + Tent (200 lbs (more than half the weight from the metal floor in tent)) plus extras...I was thinking of using 2X2 steel square tube. I don't want it to be permanent so I need to figure a way to use the already existing rack holes on the trailer. But the inside dimension seems to be a bit odd, and difficult to find a match to go down in the hole... it measures 1 1/2 by 1 1/4 rectangle. I was thinking of welding 1/8 x 1 1/2 flat steel in the holes then sliding the 2X2 tube over it and drilling a hole for a bolt to keep it there.I will take pictures of Wanda the War wagon... and some crudely drawn plans to see if anyone could help me with this. oh, the 2X2 tubing I was thinking about was 16 Gauge. Here is what she looked like when I picked her up in SC, and dragged it to NC.Thanks in advance.
Reply:take a look in the trailer section on expedition portal.   a lot of old military trailers being built for camping/ expedition travel.

Reply:Burpee, you're confusing things.  There was a different thread about using hog fencing in the back of a truck or trailer.  To the OP:  I'd be tempted to use 1 1/4" tube and just add 1/8" plates to fit the existing stake pockets in the 1 1/2" dimension.  Then adapt that to whatever gets bolted or pinned on top of that."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
Reply:Another vote for welding shims to the tubing, not the trailer.   Also, if you find out that it is a bit tight, it will be easy to grind the outside, not so easy to grind, replace, or whatever on the inside of the pocket.  Besides the trailer is an antique, why modify it if there is an easy alternative?1.25 inch square tubing is quite strong, depending on the thickness.   200 pounds is not really that much.  Depending on the thickness, it will weigh in the range of 1 to 2 pounds per foot of length, so it could be heavy, break it into parts rather than make it all one piece, it will be easier to install and remove.  At least consider the weight in the design.Keep it simple. One time I welded up a ladder rack for a friend, on the vehicle, and did not allow enough for warpage.  I helped him reinstall it one time.  You could still spring it to line it up, but it was a bit of a pain.  Luckily it was not something that he planned to take off.   I suggest that you weld it in place if you can, or at least tack weld it in place.Richard Originally Posted by box-of-rocksHello, But the inside dimension seems to be a bit odd, and difficult to find a match to go down in the hole... it measures 1 1/2 by 1 1/4 rectangle. Reply:Remember to measure the inside of the pocket, as tubing is measured od. so go small as the load is not that large , but the in and out can be a large pain in the ?. put a tube along the bottom about an inch up from the top of the bed and that shoud insure the fit in the pocket.Swanny
