C3 x 1.5 channel for welding table frame?

I am looking at used C3 x 1.5 pallet rack for my table's frame.  I was previously looking at 4x4 x 0.250" or larger angle iron.  The C3 is a fair deal cheaper.  Although both are about 1/4" thick, it looks like the moment of inertia of the C3 channel is about half of the 4" channel - so the frame will be more prone to flex under load.  The frame will be around 105" L x 48" W.  Should I pony up for a 4" frame?   Table top is 5/8" thick and will generally be used for light-duty tasks but would like to be able to occasionally use it to hold a tractor FEL & Bucket, bush-hog, or other large/heavy objects.Thanks

Reply:Is there big $$$$ difference in cost ??  Your only gonna do it once right ?  Heavier is better. If you want lighter just buy one. That's the beauty of building your own, it will be heavy and hold anything you can chain fall on to it.

Reply:I understand the allure of getting something cheap, but considering the size and weight of your table and its intended use, bigger is definitely better. Also, the height of the web has a greater effect on strength than the thickness. Doubling up two 3" channels will still not have the load-bearing strength of 4" angle.You could compromise and make the outer frame and legs from 4 x 4 x 1/4" angle and use the C3 for bracing the short (48") way under the table top.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
