Note to self: NO WELDING IN SNEAKERS that was a dumb *** maneuver on my part. too lazy to put on my boots for a quick job and now have a smouldering little crater in the top of my foot.Miller Multimatic 255

Reply:That happens. Like sometimes you button the top button of shirt. Other times you don't. How does that spark know when you don't ??? It's like those thermos bottles, how does it know when the liquid should be kept hot or cold !

Reply:I've forgotten where it is, a thread about you know you're a welder if, there was a list of ifs. The one I thought was funniest: someone comes along and says "you're on fire", without stopping, you respond "I know"As a kid, I was given advice by an experienced welder, he told me to buy my boots too large. "When you feel something hot in there, kick it to the toe of your boot and wait for it to cool." I would trip on clown shoes.

Reply:How about laying on one's side and having a "meteor" shoot into the ear canal, landing on the ear drum? Thar hasn't happened to me, but I've read about it. The very limited few times I've welded in that awkward position, I'll loosely put a foam ear plug in my ear, thus still allowing me to hear but also protect my ear drum.Lincoln Power Mig 216Lincoln AC/DC-225/125Miller 625 X-Treme PlasmaMiller 211 Forney 95FI-A 301HF 91110Victor Journeyman O/PMilwaukee DaytonMakita Baileigh NRA Life Member
Reply:Well other than the few times I've been to the gym, I haven't worn anything other than boots since the age 13, but I will throw in my advice when shopping for work boots. Don't buy ones that the eyelets for the laces go way down low on your boots. I had a dingle berry drop off and get down in between the flap for the laces and the boot, we had big pressurized sprayers for anti-spatter when that happened, I sprayed that in there to get relief because I couldn't get my boots off fast enough.

Reply:The hot goober on the ear drum happened to the maintenance man in a tannery we were doing work in. several operations and he still had to retire young because of the lingering problems.Last edited by lars66; 02-02-2014 at 09:17 AM.
Reply:I have a pair of gym socks that are full of little holes where the little sparks burned through my sneakers the one time I thought stick welding with 6011 in them would be fine because I'd keep my feet out of the way, I laugh every time I put those sox on to go to the gym. Only leather Wellington style for me. Is foam the right thing for your ears? Sounds like an enhanced interrogation technique that I don't want to experience!

Reply:It always comes down the the old saying " never enough time to do it right, but always time to do it over" the extra few minutes to put proper protection on saves hours of suffering later, and we never learn...and we all take the chance and do it...Of all the things I lost I miss my mind the most...I know just enough about everything to be dangerous......You cant cure stupid..only kill it...

Reply:I would add; don't wear a watch. In my youth I had built up a worn out trailer coupler. It was too tight to slip over the ball. I would heat it with a heating tip allow a bit of excess metal drip away. I failed to use a plumb bob to calculate the fall line. In said fall line was my left wrist. The half teaspoon drop of liquid steel dripped under my watch. During my rain dance, I ripped the watch off taking with it the now flat watch sized drop of steel and enough flesh to reveal white bone, I couldn't wear a watch for years, the flesh was so tender a small bump would tear it open, a nasty scar!

Reply:Winchester or Federal brass? Ive got some nickel plated Speer I might try - easier to keep clean / less powder residue.
Reply:@Blawless, it isn't even worth posting pictures of the work. I was just running beads for the purpose of testing out a couple of different helmets and different shade lenses for my pipeliner helmet. But if you look in the "mig, tig, stick, oxyfuel" category, you will see some of my work. And if I was going to really show you a picture of my work, I'd have to put up a spreadsheet. Welding is my hobby, accounting is my work, which explains a lot....Miller Multimatic 255
