Reply:I've built and seen a whole lot of "custom" cars and almost all of these things wind up being a sagging, self chipping, poorly closing and flimsy mess, but yes, it is "custom" to do something like this "right" takes a lot of rienforcements and stiffening... the front of that door where the stock hinges mount is strong and rienforced, made to be very ridgid with the 2 stock hinges, to suicide it with one hinge you would need a lot of rienforcement at the rear of the door shell and a lot of rienforcement to the quarter panel where the hinge mounts. a lot... something that is just about never done right on the majority of "custom" cars....miller 330a bp TIGmiller dynasty 200DX TIGmillermatic 185 MIGthermal dynamics cutmaster 101 plasma cuttersnap-on YA5550 plasma cutterhypertherm powermax 30 plasma cutterbaileigh CS225 cold sawetc....

Reply:Many cars from 20's to the late 30's had suicide doors,or backward hinged doors..Yes i know that But i am lost as to what this has to do with welding cause all i see is a really ugly hinge on a door with bolts in itNo background of the welding that should have been done to mount that hinge where it is as was pointed outWhere are the pics of the work that needed to be done to the now door post and quarter panel to bolt that ugly hinge toonot to mention the pics of the fit up when the door is closedTwo of my friends that i do welding for do hot rods and race cars and restorations on cars and trucks and there real anal about things like thisSo that's why i'm asking questions about this and being a little sarcasticBacked my CATMA over your CARMA oops clusmy me What would SATAN do ?? Reply:They do have Gull Wing/Suicide combos but i dont fell like dying in 1985 so ill keep the suicide hinges.I did do alot of reinforcing to both the body and door with 1/8 inch steel and like most of the auto body welding whats the point in posting pics of a bunch of tacks. You cant see in the pic but their is a 1/2 inch square tube running from the top of the hinge to the bottom of the door this eliminates the swag from the door.to make sure the body line all match up you weld tabs "which you can see on the driver door" on the front and back of the door so you can cut the door mount plate hole out keeping the body straight. Thin you can start checking clearance of window track, window arms, ect... and to see if the door will open with out alot of lean.In all alot of checking alot of tacks alot of time if i had to guess 20+ hours welding cutting grinding fit fit fit fit fit fit ect... but to me fun on a bun i love my car and alot of other cars and this is what i do here in no where ky. |
