Hey guys is there any charts floating around here on what psi goes with what welding tip. I am trying to set up these tips I got. I can set the #1 tip but as soon as I swap to a 3 or 5 all hell breaks loose.
Reply:I would try and find the information from the maker of your device.  The Harris equal pressure for acetylene is the simplest you just set the pounds for both at the number of the tip. Well if the number is 0 then set at 1.  Most if not most then some the number correlates to cubic feet per hour (standard cubic feet I think) of acetylene or btu equivelant of that if alternate fuel.  It depends on device and the size of the mixing holes and which gas is in the center.  I think folks on these internet discussion groups are awful fussy about the pressure, the higher the pressure the less you turn the knob.  Surely if you set up for the larger tip the smaller one would work with the knobs choked down unless one was a low fuel pressure injector type and the other was an equal pressure type.Another thing occured to me would be if the mixer and tip for the #1 and the other numbers have become mis matched mixer and tip.franLast edited by fran...k.; 12-11-2011 at 05:56 PM.

Reply:Here is a video of me trying to set up a number 5 generico welding.
Reply:It looks to me like the tip needs cleaning or replacement. It looks to me like your regulators aren't (might not be can't see when you turn the knobs) holding a steady pressure it might be necessary to wait a bit longer after turning a knob for the pressure/flow to stabilize. It kind of looked like the fuel wasn't turned up (anywhere close to) enough once you started adding oxygen, are you sure there is enough fuel in the tank?  Has that guage which was around 7 psi at the begining still there? You went to the effort of positing a video would it be correct to assume you at least spend the effort to stick little drills or cleaning wires in the mixing passages of the device.
Reply:Fuel was at 8 and oxygen at 12 and they are full and holding pressure. I just for them and it came with a 1,3,5 tips. I can adjust the number 1 with no problem It's the number 3 and 5 that act this way. I am new to welding tips. I got this set up for the cutting torch which I can set up fine.
Reply:In your video, you don't have enough acetylene flow before opening the oxygen valve.  It could be that you aren't opening the fuel valve far enough, or your acetylene pressure gauge is not accurate . . . 8 psi is more than enough pressure for that tip.  Increase the flow of acetylene (open the valve) until the flame jumps off the tip, then reduce it until it just re-attaches, then open the oxygen. And I agree with fran...k, your tip is very dirty or damaged.  It should produce a conical flame . . . not multiple points.  You can buy a set of tip cleaners at your LWS or Tractor Supply.  Be gentle, copper is fairly soft.  You're just trying to cleaning out the carbon and spatter.Dynasty 300DXSmith He/Ar gas mixerMM350PHobart Handler 120Smith LW7, MW5, AW1A
Reply:It came with a tool that has many different size if wire files. Is that the tool you are talking about.
Reply:First of all, if you want tip charts, please post what manufacturer's equipment you want them for.For nearly all welding tips, use 3 psi acetylene to 10 psi oxygen. Cutting tips depend a lot more on the orifice which varies between manufacturer for a given number.Rosebud tips are all over the place and you should use propane anyway.
Reply:They are generico brand. I think that's the the gauges say on them.
Reply:"Generico" is a literally a pun on generic. The object is a round tip hole. A drill bit held between thumb and forefinger can do the job.Fortunately, quality torches are very reasonable or cheap on Ebay.
Reply:I have to agree that there's no where near enough acetylene going there. I don't know if you've not got the valve open enough,or to small and/or long a hose, or to many restrictions in the line (blow back preventers and check valves, to many will restrict flow), or simply pinched or blocked line or regulator. At any rate you need way more gas than that on a big tip. I've seen lots of tips spread out like that when run way to low.Millermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htm
