I need some pointers on welding 1/4 rectangular tubing. If welding a butt joint, Where would be the ideal place to tack them together? And when starting the welds do I start on the tack welds? Is rectangular tubing welded in the same sequence as round tubing?  Thanks
Reply:I'm no pro but I would do a tack in each corner and not start the welding at the tack. You put the tack there to hold it, so if you weld on it and heat it up and make it soft then what's it going to hold?Like I said I'm still new but that is what makes sense in my mind. Maybe a picture so it will help others point you in the proper direction.Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer
Reply:I never start on a tack unless it is something I don't care about like trash cans or whatever. Your start is always the coldest part of the weld so starting on a big glob won't help with penetration.
Reply:Tack in the middle of the tube where they touch in the 3 places and # 4 is the starting point for the weld and the end of the weld.Easy enough?...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:even after the first tack you want to check for square before doing the others as the tack will want to pull it in the direction of the heat. So you might need to hamer it around a bit, so check and recheck for squareness after each tack.  and this is just M O O.
Reply:if you want your welds to look good, do small tacks. Just a quick "button" tack will do the trick most of the time. I usually tack on the corners because I have been at this for 20 years and can burn into my tacks easily. I don't like tacking in the middles because of the lump that it can cause. But that is just me. A lot of people think they need to put inch long tacks on 2 inch tubes or else they will fall apart. Small is the trick to nice looking welds.CERTIFICATIONS:7018M- H.V.O10718M- H.V.O11018M- H.V.O9N10- H.V.O71T-1-HYM- H.O.V100S1 PULSE ARC 0,035- H.O.V100S1 PULSE ARC 0.045- H.O.VER70S-3 PULSE ARC 0.035 H.O.VER70S-3 PULSE ARC 0.045 H.O.VER5554- H.O.V
Reply:Tack in the corners.... Watch from a pro who will show you how to tack square tubing.  You will like this video.....[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ulzR8exiRqM&feature=BFp&list=FLyxwfD_OgFZI  NqD5D0y-aaw"]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ulzR8exiRqM&feature=BFp&list=FLyxwfD_OgFZI  NqD5D0y-aaw[/ame]Lincoln Power Mig 216Lincoln AC/DC-225/125Miller  625 X-Treme PlasmaMiller 211 Forney 95FI-A 301HF 91110Victor Journeyman O/PMilwaukee DaytonMakita  Baileigh NRA Life Member

Reply:Great video. I like the way he shows the basics on fit up as well as the welding to show the novice fitters how its done.CERTIFICATIONS:7018M- H.V.O10718M- H.V.O11018M- H.V.O9N10- H.V.O71T-1-HYM- H.O.V100S1 PULSE ARC 0,035- H.O.V100S1 PULSE ARC 0.045- H.O.VER70S-3 PULSE ARC 0.035 H.O.VER70S-3 PULSE ARC 0.045 H.O.VER5554- H.O.V
