Going to be taking my very first welding test in a couple days for a company that builds oilfield equipment. I was wondering any tips like thing to do and not to do? Testing should be on flat and vertical positions stick and mig. Hopefully I wont mess up (kinda nervous about messing up root pass or something)
Reply:Practice like it's a test, and test like it's practice. Stay calm and smooth welds are easy. There will be many more test's in your future and they will get easier. You'll do fine if you practiced and good luck.CERTIFICATIONS:7018M- H.V.O10718M- H.V.O11018M- H.V.O9N10- H.V.O71T-1-HYM- H.O.V100S1 PULSE ARC 0,035- H.O.V100S1 PULSE ARC 0.045- H.O.VER70S-3 PULSE ARC 0.035 H.O.VER70S-3 PULSE ARC 0.045 H.O.VER5554- H.O.V

Reply:Took the test today but had some trouble in either the flat or vertical position. First up was mig fillet weld in 1g which couldnt get the machine to dial in. Tried Es and whips motion ..still cause it to a little hump. Next was down hill mig which came out decent. Switched over to flux on 1g fillet..part of the bottom toes were cold. Flux vertical up came out decent too. Sticked 1g fillet came out decent but didnt let it cool down and ran the vertical up...ran it half way and turn to booboo cause it over heated. Dont know if they going to hire me or not...have to wait 2 weeks till the year starts to know. Guess I was nervous and was in a rush. Lesson learned I guess for a first time welding test.
Reply:The first is always the worse....till the next test then that one is....HaHaHa. Each up coming test will be worse than the last. So....calm down and breath, then weld. A test is a test is a test. If you get all worked up and fail then that didnt help anything. Give yourself the best chance to pass, ease up on yourself cause the inspector and code compliance will be hard enough on you. Fall back on what you know how to do then just act. If by chance you dont make it....ask what nailed you and what would they suggest as to how to fix it, it does not hurt to get along with the QA/QC personnel. As being on the other side of the fence, I always appreciate some one that is willing to learn and get better rather than throw a fit and cuss everyone out. Remember, you welded the coupon no one else did. Even after you get that job and welding your butt off those production welds will forever belong to you, have pride in that. Let us know how it comes out...and good luck.A young green pipe welder asked an old salt one day...How can I make the weld on the bottom of the pipe look like the top.......The old salt replied....Screw up the top......
Reply:Now that you've tested, set up to practice on your own and take many tests. Welding is a perishable skill so do it often to stay on your game. We had many former students come in to take practice bend tests. Some vo-techs will let you pay by the day. |
