Hello, I'm picking up some 5 x 3 x 5/16 angle in 10' sticks to use as lateral beams on the long sides (10') of a new table.  These are going to be cut off of 40' pieces.  Based on some photos, I believe the bundles or individual 40' pieces are only supported at 2 points.  Over a 40' span is there any concern of permanent deformation out of true or just sagging that won't remain once cut to 10' sticks?Guessing the piece may be moved around on a fork truck prior to cutting down from 40' also. These have been stored outside so there'll be a little surface rust to remove, but I'm expecting/prepared for that.ThanksLast edited by AmericanWelder; 02-16-2014 at 01:01 AM.
Reply:P.S. Isn't $0.50 / lb a pretty good price.Thanks
Reply:I haven't bought any angle that size for a long time, but based on some other stuff I have bought price seems very good. At that price I'd be tempted to pick up a bunch for some misc projects I want to do.As far as bends, that's going to depend a lot on how well they treated the material. I've seen guys bend the crap out of stuff with a lift. 5"x3" angle is reasonably stiff compared to some thinner stuff so I wouldn't be super concerned..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:.50 is what I sold for retail 15 years ago. I would love to buy at that price around here even a little out of shape. I wouldn't think that that sise angle would get bent up too much moving it like that unless they are careless.
Reply:Great price A588 angle around. .75

Reply:That's a good price on a small quantity . I have seen the angle straight as can be and sometimes so bent that getting a straight 3-4 foot piece was a challenge.Miller xmt304,  Miller S22 p12, Miier Maxstar SD, Miller 252 w 30A, Miller super32p12, Lincoln Ranger 9, Thermal Arc 181I with spoolgun, Hypertherm 10000 ,Smith torches. Reply:The majority of steel now adays is not straight. Most material from the mills comes 40-50 and 60' length, the suppliers are over worked and under staffed and do not take the time to lift the material properly. I have seen so many shops take a gantery crane and lift one end of some 60' beams and put a permanent bow in the beams rather than lifting them from several points. The guys in the shop act like they dont care, its just there job to get it in the shop and out the door to the guy going to use it.
Reply:@ CEP - brilliant.  Like the way you approach the problem.  Send the heat bro!"Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi
Reply:Thank you, folks.  The angle looks good.  Not even much surface rust to speak of.  Now I have to figure out what to use as cross braces under the top and for the bottom shelf.  Had hoped to pick up some used 3" structural pallet beams (C, 1.5") but looks like they are gone...
