I ordered some fancy welding rod that will weld tool steel and spring steel. I only ordered two pounds just to try it out. It's a good thing I didn't order more because it ended up being $150 for two pounds of 3/32. I didn't think to ask the price first because I had no idea that welding rod could cost this much. It's Brutus - A rod from Rockmount. 125,000 PSI with 30% elongation before failure. The weld bead has a gold color ....I guess there is gold in it at that price.
Reply:thats a nickel rod.Nickel rods are always VERY expensive. Nickel aint cheap, and we dont grow it here- its all imported.But sometimes, its the ticket.I like to tig weld broken cast iron with nickel rod- no preheat or postheat, and it really works.But you gotta pay to play.
Reply:A cheap alternative are E312 electrodes, commonly sold as "weldall". Note the properties of tool steel or spring steel will dramatically change adajcent to the weld deposit.Cheers
Reply:I know this is an old post but if anyone is interested I have a 10lb box of the Brutus-A Rockport rod in 1/8 in available for $200 plus shipping.
