hi guystaking a test monday on ss 309 3/32. tee joint vertical and overhead. don't know plate thickness.any tips or videos anyone can give. i am ok with 7018 welding. i am structural welder. read and heardwork 309 like 7018. any help would be appreciated.
Reply:i cant believe not one welder on this site could help me on this.pitifull, pitifull
Reply:309 is a stainless alloy that is used in welding rods.  I have never seen 309 sheet or tube.   I am guessing you will be welding with E 309-16 ??   If you have welded with E 7018 the stainless alloy electrodes will be not much different however because of the electrical resistance of 300 stainless your electrode may overheat before you use it all.
Reply:i've never had much luck welding stainless in the vertical position so didn't want to give bogus info.i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla
Reply:Ditto doc. Did a bunch of big 317L filter frames(scrubbers) many years ago and it sucked going uphand. No testing was required but my buddy was a perfectionist. We had every good iron man from the hall screwing around with it in the evenings.I don't know what kind of test they would-could have passed. The "engineer"( who couldn't plug in a tv) spec'd it that way and paid for-delivered the filler. PITA.It was 3/16 and could have been TIGged. 4 corners each frame. About 110 inches weld total.too many frames to count. Hundreds I recall. These  Bubble gumTooth pixDuct tapeBlack glueGBMF hammerScrew gun --bad battery (see above)
Reply:bring lots of grinding wheels.
Reply:The technique is "like" 7018 but it just wants to slum. Flat and horizontal it lays beautifully. Is this some rocketship test or do you just glue it up nicely to be strong and have a decent appearance ?If the latter is true you'll likely be alrightLast edited by Burpee; 02-25-2014 at 04:31 PM.Bubble gumTooth pixDuct tapeBlack glueGBMF hammerScrew gun --bad battery (see above)
