This is a 6013 weld failure.  It's a tension/tensile failure.  Either the filler wasn't up to the stress, or the machine is being used way above its design capacity.  Probably a little of both.  I'm in the process of cutting trees with trunks between 14-24" in diameter, and about 30+ feet tall, and then skidding (sp?) them.  This guy failed when I tried lifting the mother of all trees with just the finger because I couldn't get close enough to encircle itSorta in need of a bit of Viagra The failure   Also appears to be some penetration issues here too  Grind out the old weld, re-establish the bevel. And butter it up.  7018AC at 175amps.And back to it BTW.........there were some nice heartfelt replies to the fire thread, haven't had time to respond to them, but I really do appreciate the sentiment REALLY"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:[QUOTE=Kelvin;1482371]I'm surprised anyone would use 6013 in that application./QUOTE]That was my first thought too, 6013 is low penetration. Some of the paint looks deeper than that weld.Sign that 7018 bead up for the "Stick like TIG" contest!

Reply:Samm, how long ago was it that you welded that and how much welding have you done since? Reply:I think your problem started in the green circles.  Weld didn't quite make it around the corner on the right and it looks like there was some cracking present based on the rust.  Penetration is on the low side, but you might could have got away with it if it was buttoned up all the way Attached ImagesLast edited by Fred s; 08-17-2012 at 03:03 PM.Experience is something you get right after you need it

Reply:Corrosion at the non-fully-welded corners, overload conditions, and probably a bit too small on the fillet size seem like the big failure contributors there.Pretty nice looking fillet there Samm.  But you really should wrap around the corner better.  Cause right now you have a fillet on the two sides of the corner but those two fillets have not achieved a Zen-state on welded-oneness.  You stopped the weld bead at the corner and also have a small ending crater as well.  The best laid schemes ... Gang oft agley ...

Reply:Samm you sure seem to be able to roll with any calamity that the world dishes out to you.  I have no doubt that it must be a constant shock and disappointment to see your tended fields all black but in light of that here you are barricading against the next fire. You're a good man Samm. Thanks for your posts too - I always get something out of them.Miller Syncrowave 180SDLincoln WeldPak 100 with gasHandheld Milwaukee BandsawO/A Cutting Torch
Reply:Good demonstration Samm.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Good going, Samm.  There's always room for improvement, but it ain't a "farmer weld". Lookin' good, bud. Still pissed about the fire and what you folks had to go through..."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
Reply:I think that's referred to as an preengineered failure point Samm. Helps to keep you from distorting the material by having the weld fail before the tube does. Makes repairs easier and helps limit damage to the machine... .No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:Samm,No need to rush on the fire break. Everything around the house for quite a distance is already burned , with the exception of those trees near the house. It's going to be several years before it would even be possible to have another fire like that one as there's so little left to burn.  It could have been much worse. Thanks for posting your welding, both the good and the not so good. There's a lot there for the newcomers to learn from. That 7018 pass in the photo looks very close to ZTFab's MIG welds. Reply:If you painted it blue that wouldn't have happened. If you don't want to stand behind our Troops, feel free to stand in front of them.
Reply:Sam how do you use it is it to move trees after they are cut. I am thinking about building a clamshell deal to go on a tractor 3point boom.

Reply:What a great tool and it certainly does its job Well done looks like the repair is holding up, Second time round i would be inclined to make a deep Vee prep and do several root and multi runs followed by a good cap to finish off.You can see that that part is subject to most of the stresses so that weld hads to be the strongest. They often say the simple ideas work best, Theres no need to over complicate things, you did well there
