I bought a used L-tec Mig Master 250 about a month ago (My guess a mid 90s machine) ,I cleaned it up,new ground clamp,a profax 12 ft gun,new roll of Forney 023 wire in it,I been running it a little here and there and its been welding real nice but today I rolled out my HH187 with a Profax 10ft gun, upgraded ground clamp and a roll of Hobart 023 in it and did a side by side comparison on clean 18 gauge sheet metal. Iv got to say the HH187 has it beat down on the low end,its not a big difference but noticeable. The 187  has a  brighter ,cleaner and more stable arc.Another note and Im not sure why but after running a pass with the 250 there it ends up with a little smokey residue on the metal and with the 187 the bead and surrounding area is bright and shiny,Anyone happen to know does that have to due with the Forney Wire, gas or the machine itself? Anyway the short of it I think there is something to be said about the newer technology in boards and trans formers,The difference in the arc almost reminds me of and old points ignition spark to a newer electronic ignition bright snap, they both get the job done but one is clearly better,,thanks jimEsab Multimaster 260Esab Caddy160IEsab 161 STLESAB powercut 650Esab 220i tigLincoln Precision Tig 225Lincoln IdealArc 250INE SKYLINE 1500Klutch 140iMEASURE TWICE IS FOR MORONS
Reply:Im told the 187's are hard to beat on really thin stuff. I dont think Ive yet used mine on anything that thin, but hearing that from many different people was one reason I bought my 187. They are a fine machine, glad you like yours too Back in the day when I started tig welding (a few months ago lol) I used to get that "smoke" around the bead effect goin on. Turned out I didnt have enough gas flowing, you might want to try it again with a few more CFH...[Account Abandoned 8/8/16 Please Do Not Attempt Contact Or Expect A Reply]. Reply:For a valid comparison, it seems to me that you need to run the same wire in both welders.Rick V 1 Airco Heliwelder 3A/DDR3 CTC 70/90 amp Stick/Tig Inverters in Parallel1 Lincoln MIG PAK 151 Oxy-Acet

Reply:Jim,Not running the same roll of wire on both units has tainted your experiment. In my experience the Hobart wires (HB-28 and Hobart brand) tend to produce some softness in the arc; whereas, the Forney wire tends to add some crispness to the arc.The gun length difference could be giving the Handler 187 a slight edge too.The L-TEC could be getting old enough that the filter caps aren't performing as well as they did 20 years ago.In the past when I compared tap #1 of a Handler 187  to tap #1 of an ESAB Migmaster 250 the advantage (very slight) in arc quality went the Migmaster. The 187 had the 10' factory H-10 gun on it, and the Migmaster had a 10' Binzel Alpha 2 gun with an Alpha 1 swan neck installed on the gun. I used the same rolls of .023 wire on both units.Beings the quality and performance of electronic components varies some, since both units are a solid design, if you tried multiple 187s and Migmasters I could see some of the Handlers being better then the Migmasters, and vice verse.  I ran multiple Handler 187 units, and the performance of each unit varied slightly. The original Prototype 187 (modified Handler 180) that I field tested was the best of the bunch.I've also ran a couple different Handler 210 units. The 210 I currently have in my possession (MVP model)  performs a little better then the previous test unit that I finally sent back to Hobart a few months ago. After just reading other posts, I see I forgot to mention that I used the same bottle of C25 on both unit when I was testing the 187 against the Migmaster.Last edited by Dan; 01-08-2012 at 01:30 PM.ESAB Migmaster 250 Hobart Ironman 230Multimatic 215TWECO Fabricator 181i & 211iHH125EZ - nice little fluxcore only unitMaxstar 150 STH - very nice
Reply:I really like the hobart wires and find they out perform other wires even in the same machine.

Reply:heh there is no comparison between the two machines.   MM250 wins hands down.   how does that HH do on 1/2 plate with spray transfer?   oh wait, IT DOESN'TTiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250
Reply:First off thanks for all the feedback,,I didnt realize there would be such a variable in the brand of wire and gas.I will do the swap this week and re post. I do agree with Dan my newer ESAB migmaster250 appears to have that clean brighter arc but again I have that loaded with Hobart 030. So as the schedule always  Il do some wire swapping also I will run the same bottle swapping between the machines and get back,Southpaw I agree ,,thanks jimEsab Multimaster 260Esab Caddy160IEsab 161 STLESAB powercut 650Esab 220i tigLincoln Precision Tig 225Lincoln IdealArc 250INE SKYLINE 1500Klutch 140iMEASURE TWICE IS FOR MORONS

Reply:Originally Posted by Brand XIt's sticking out the brass nut. Loosen the nut a bit, take the gun off, and push the guide tube out. Piece of 3/32 tig wire works good, Pushing from the back ( though the red plastic tube) when you install the tube, stick it in the front of the machine, put the gun back on,push the guide tube from the brass nut side to take up any slack. Tighten the brass nut, and you are good to go. Might have to remove your lower drive roll to get a bit more room.  I've seen them a bit tight before, but they do come out. I don't think you have to loosen the black wheel screw to remove the guide tube? Would not hurt though. This is the guide tube you want. I don't think there is a .023 one, even though it's listed.http://www.scottgrossstore.com/servl....030%22/Detail

Reply:Jim,I did a quick scan thru some of your past post, and I didn't see any mention of you purchasing an .023/.030 drive roll (P/N 21155)  for your  Migmaster. Do you have the unit set up with the correct drive roll for running an .023 wire?ESAB Migmaster 250 Hobart Ironman 230Multimatic 215TWECO Fabricator 181i & 211iHH125EZ - nice little fluxcore only unitMaxstar 150 STH - very nice
Reply:Hi Dan,,,,yes I had one I bought a while back when I picked up my ESAB,Im going to do some more testing Saturday swapping wire and gas.I happen to be doing a job for a fellow today that's a retired metals expert,he worked in Aerospace,I mentioned it to him and he was suspect right away about the different brand wire.He know enough about it and welding to make my head spin,so the short of it and the little bit I was able to absorb was that all the wires are copper coated but different company,s use different organic materials and or varnishes or sh alack on wires for specific purposes, and Im not even sure if I got that right but that's about where he lost me.    thanks jimEsab Multimaster 260Esab Caddy160IEsab 161 STLESAB powercut 650Esab 220i tigLincoln Precision Tig 225Lincoln IdealArc 250INE SKYLINE 1500Klutch 140iMEASURE TWICE IS FOR MORONS
Reply:I got a chance to pull the 023 Forney (10lb spool)wire out of the Migmaster and put it in the HH187 today, something I notice when I was backing the Forney wire out of the gun and torch the wire felt wavy where when I was backing the Hobart wire (2lb spool)out I didnt feel that. I did notice welding with it now it affects the stability of the weld, seems like the wire is coming out and is wandering a bit,had me wondering if I got the right guide tube if it would help iron the waves out of the wire,,It defiantly gets the job done but I feel I either got a bum roll of wire or its inferior, Il opt for the Hobart wire from now on,the hobart wire seems to light up and  burn alot smoother,,at this point the HH187 dosnt feel to me any better then the migmaster with the forney in it. I didnt spend alot of time testing (ran out of light) but Il post more,,,  Thanks JimEsab Multimaster 260Esab Caddy160IEsab 161 STLESAB powercut 650Esab 220i tigLincoln Precision Tig 225Lincoln IdealArc 250INE SKYLINE 1500Klutch 140iMEASURE TWICE IS FOR MORONS
