Any suggestion for my first welding in my life?

I have a cheap welder from china. I used E6013 3/32.I was trying to weld a nut to the end of a rod.They are zinc coated.Any suggestion?1 zx7-200 Cheap IGBT welder.

Reply:1- Don't weld something zinc coated, the fumes are dangerous to breathe in. 2-Once you got through the zinc crap, you were welding OK.3- Always practice on something flat...... like that nice piece of angle you have.  Practice on a 1" piece of angle, make multiple passes until it is filled up and cut it in half.  If you did a good job, there will not be any imperfections in the metal after you cut it in half.  It is a good way to test how you are doing and a great way to learn.4- Buy a better welder as you get better!!!
Reply:You are going to get the zinc-is-poisonous nuts coming out of the woodwork as usual. None of them seem to be able to read the label on their multivitamins, which all contain zinc. Zinc oxide is also rubbed onto your skin as white ointment by mountain climbers and others who need serious UV protection. If you breathe zinc oxide (the white smoke) you may get slight flu-like symptoms the first day, which can be generally relieved nearly 100% by a glass of milk. Also, zinc does not "gasify" - it oxides, and the white smoke-appearing stuff is actually fine powder. So if you want to be conservative and not breathe it, all you need is a dust mask. I spent 3 years of my life welding up galvanized angle iron making floor grating supports on guided missile frigates for the US Navy, only got "Monday morning fever" once.If you truly don't want to weld zinc, I suggest you soak your parts in a lye solution, which will eat away the zinc overnight. You used to be able to buy lye at the supermarket in the cleaning section, but now you have to go to a good hardware store to buy it.My suggestion is to find a local welding school with a night or weekend class, and go there. Reply:as was explained to me by my doctor, there are different forms of zinc. cheaper multivitamins have a useless non digestable form that just goes straight through. good multivitamins have a form derived from plants that the human body is able to process. the form used in galvanizing is toxic, and when welding professionally I felt it was important enough to not breathe it that I bought an air pump equipped welding helmet. some people play fast and loose with their health figuring you have to die from something.
