I want to build a wine bottle something or other but I would like to buy the 5" metal rings instead of making them (seems too hard to do). Where do I buy them?An example of a ring (but I would want mine to be smooth):My $120 Mig - Harbor Freight 151T 220VMy $300 Plasma Cutter - Rattler 40A  110V/220VCurrent project (Miata Trailer):http://www.lightweightmiata.com/trailer/
Reply:It really wouldn't be that hard to make them, unless you want them really thick.  Even 1/4" hot rolled would bend easily enough...  I'd just take a piece of hot rolled rod, tack it to a piece of 4" steel pipe, and start bending it around and around in a coil.  Slice down the side with a grinder and give em a slight bend to close the gap.  Tack weld, and you're done.As for buying them, I haven't a clue, but you'll likely eat up a substantial chunk of your potential profit margain (assuming these are for a job)You didn't build that.'85 Miller AEAD-200LE
Reply:Find an old coil sprint from a car or truck. Cut the rings out of the coil with a cutoff wheel. Heat the rings to pull the ends into alignment. Or you can buy them from http://www.kingmetals.com/ Here's a link to a 5" forged ring for $1.48 each:http://www.kingmetals.com/Catalog/It...A68DC4CAD573A6 Attached ImagesLast edited by forhire; 08-15-2012 at 09:57 PM.

Reply:Another option is to get a chunk of pipe the diameter you need and cut slices from it. Works best i you have a  carbide saw or bandsaw to do the cutting..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:When i need rings for a job i use a bit of pipe the same diameter as the inside measurement, Fit it to the lathe with a hole near the chuck for the bar, Then at a slow speed turn the lathe on and feed the bar along the pipe, When finished, Cut down the middle with a 1mm cutting disk and weld up the individual rings. Easy and cheap
