I'm curious about the performance of a xmt 304 with a 60m feeder vs. a millermatic 251. I could get either for about the same money. The xmt would be used for mig only so the other functions would not really matter. Pro's and con's?Last edited by fortyonethirty; 01-21-2012 at 05:09 PM.Ian TannerKawasaki KX450 and many other fine tools
Reply:Hello fortyonethirty, there is really no comparison between the two of these machines when you compare performance, capability, and likely longevity as well. The XMT with the 60 series feeder is a truly industrial combination. Additionally, it can be operated on both single and three phase power and many different voltages. If it is the multiprocess, CC/CV version it can be used for SMAW, FCAW, GMAW, GMAW/pulse with pulse add-on, lift arc/scratch start GTAW (DC only), or you can plug in a number of spool gun/push-pull gun systems. It also has considerably more available amperage with a higher efficiency rating (meaning less energy consumption), weighs a lot less too and is more portable. One more item that is associated with the XMT is the arc control, this allows for inductance control when the unit is used for GMAW and when it is in the SMAW mode it has the ability to control arc "DIG". The Millermatic 251 is a good home machine and it can be outfitted to accept a spool gun in the same fashion as the XMT, yet it doesn't have the other features that can additionally be utilized with a spool gun in the manner the XMT offers. It also has less power, doesn't have the same versatility, is less efficient, and limits you to wire processes only. Since I don't necessarily know your intended purpose you may opt for the 251, but if you are going to be expanding your uses and needs for different processes and applications the XMT/60series feeder will fit the bill much better. Best regards, Allanaevald
Reply:You could make a XMT weld somewhat like a MM- 251, (Not sure why you would) but you could never make a MM- 251 weld like a XMT 304Esab/Lorch ET-220iEsab 160i caddyThermal LM-200 Lincoln feedersThermal Pee-Wee 85sThermal 60i- 3phase /RPC powered (Beast)Thermal Drag-gun 35CINE 1500 Klutch 140i
Reply:XMT all the way.  You say "used for MIG only" but could you make that same statement in two years?
Reply:As far as costs go.A used 251 should be in the neighborhood of $1000 to maybe $1250.  (I've seen $900)On Craigslist, I've seen a couple of XMTs for  $1100 or so, but most seem to ask more - like $1500.  Add in a wire feeder plus cart and you are probably pushing $2000.So, yes, you can get a better, more versatile welder for double the money. On the flip side, I've seen people ask $2000 for a 251 without spool gun.  Apparently Google shopper wasn't working for them at the time or they didn't know the 252 existed. Both are good welders.   Buy the one that is the best deal.  If they are both incredible deals, buy both, sell the one you don't like.A couple of things to consider.  The XMT CV/CC can be upgraded to pulse welding.  The XMT is significantly lighter in weight to.  Makes its a semi-portable stick welder (well, you will have to drag a pretty heavy extension cord)Con Fuse!Miller Dynasty 350Millermatic 350P-Spoolmatic 30AMiller Multimatic 200Hypertherm PowerMax 1000G3Miller Maxstar 200DX
